Interesing info re 68 carbs

This was shared w me from Kurt. Would be interesting to find out when the 254 carb came into effect on the 68 w-30's. Initially 251's were said to be used. See attached bulletin.

I've found something very significant. We know that the early '68 W30s did not have the 7028254 W30. (I presume they got the 7028251 carb). But as far as I know we didn't know when they started using the 255 carb.
Well we do now! All W30s after *engine* sn 8342491. Now this will take a lot more work to determine *when* this was, but it can be done. We need to start collecting engine unit numbers of Lansing built 442s and when the car was made. Yes, all 442s. We can then start to zero in on the date. Anyone with a W30 that has the original engine (with the original oil fill tube) will now know for sure what carb they should have.

notice the date on the bulletin 6/3/68 & all W30s after *engine* sn 8342491

sn 8330065 is the original 455 in my H/O - 8M409964 (06A build week on tag)

I don't know how closely the 455 vs. 400 dates and serial number use was, but it's going to be pretty late in the model year.

I'll bet there's a similar bulletin out there for MT 68 442's with a serial number cut off for 7028251's to go to 7028253's. June 68 is right around where the 7028253's start showing up (the few that have been found)

Kurt's response

I don't think so Mike, but I think you're on the right track. You see the very same day, the next bulletin addresses problems with the manual shift 442s. Notice that the fix is adding (changing) to the very same parts that make a 7028251 carb into a 7028253 carb! So the implication here is that by this date, the 7028254 W30 carb was already being used in production, but not yet the 7028253 carb.
And since the "fix" is already in a bulletin, I wouldn't expect another bulletin mentioning the 7028253 carb.
But as I said, you were definitely thinking the right way!

I don't know if this means anything or not, but the S/N on my Lansing 4-4-2 with its original 400 engine is 8429570 and the build date on my cowl tag is 04A. VIN is 344678M336518.

I have shared this Engine Unit # before, for the implementation of the '8254 carb.
I have that TSB in a binder with others.

As for the '8253, as far as I known only and exactly ONE has ever been seen in captivity, it was shown right here at CO.com a year or two ago, and I am sure a search for 7028253 will produce that thread.

Correction- a few have surfaced lately. Photos, folks can't be bothered with. At least we have ONE photo'd unlike the SMW 403 of lore.

here's a few threads from the search

https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...7018254-a.html

https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...28253-a-4.html

https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...et-sale-2.html

THANK YOU folks who have the technology and time to share the pdf of the TSB.
