1968 Quadrjet Carb 7028253 Part 2.

https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...7028253-a.html

The above thread was closed for good reason. But it should be noted to anyone interested in this carb, that, not surprisingly, not only one, but 2 more of these carbs have surfaced. So the "only one in existence" is officially not.

https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...carb-done.html

Does anyone have a build sheet (not a broadcast card) for a '68 442 with a manual trans?

Kurt,

This is a Fremont 68 442 with QW for the engine so it's a MT. The "trans" box appears to say "HP". I can e-mail it to you if you'd like.

I don't know where I got this photo. The file date is 5/24/11 so it's a fairly recent picture poach. Probably from a thread here on CO

Thank you,
Rich

Got it, Mike, Thanks!

I was hoping for a carb code. '66-'68 build sheets have a box for the carb code. But no such luck here.

Well, Mr "I have the only one in existence" should have jumped all over the $1500 that his carb was bid to. Of course whether those bids were legitimate may have something to do with it. But his claims certainly have been put into perspective:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/171401536417...84.m1435.l2649
FWIW, this carb was made the same day as his.
I think it would be hard to respond with both feet in one's mouth.

Kurt,

I hope you bought this one. I thought about it but I don't need it because the build date is too late for mine.

I placed a bid to 301.00 same here not applicable for my build. Just was willing to spend 300 plus to show our mutual friend what they are really worth

Thanks, Mike, but it was not me. I've made one from a really nice rebuilt 252 carb for a total cost of less than 1/2 of what even that carb sold for. Not worth it to me to spend even that much money just to have one digit stamped differently on the housing.

wanna hear a crazy story? I know the guy that sold it..i saw the carb on the motor he is talking about but never saw the codes...the motor had HO/ ram air manifolds etc..and i bought all the 4 speed stuff like shifter linkage etc..then went back and bought a nice pair of buckets..a tilt and so much more...i probably spent over 2 grand with him..

i never looked close at the carb because he said it was not for sale and they where putting it the car because it was fresh etc...i remember thinking the carb looked a little crusty...never loooked...dang i could have been the second one know to exist type snob too......lol..he was so cheap i bet $100 would have bought it, if i pressed and actually looked at the numbers...$100 was his favorite price...

hes about 45 min north of me..i bought a ton of stuff from him 3 winters ago...it has to be him...he told the exact story about Cali etc...

I had to chuckle when I re-read the original debacle. I was thinking if he was a NHRA stocker and showed up to race at a National event with that carb., chances are he would NOT have passed tech. and NOT have been able to race.

Well, Dave, you made me look. It is not "chances are", it is he would *definitely not* pass Tech. Checking the NHRA Specs, the only carb for the 350 hp 400 MT is the 7028251. The 7028253 is not listed at all.
And for those keeping score, the W30 has the 251 and the 254 listed (regardless of trans) and the W31 has the 250 and 255 listed (regardless of trans).
So that's not a chuckle, that's a big belly laugh!
Thanks for coming up with that, Dave.

Are we still looking for the allusive 7028523 carb. Or is this a date/part number issue?

Restamp?

Judging from the little "step" between the main body and the surface where the "part #" is stamped, I would think that this is a re-stamp. The double hit of the "7", I've seen before; the angle of the numbers, maybe okay, but the little ledge right where it meets the main body is more than a little suspect. Just my take on it.

Ah I see what you mean did not know that step was not originally there. Makes you wonder. Price is right so I may still go for it but I see your point.

Would a 7028251 be more correct for a 1968 442 manual?

what’s your build week?

the 7028253 wasn’t used until at least late April or early May

the 7028251 was used the entire model year for both auto and MT

Well the body tag says 4th week of April and the differential cover has D 24 so we think made 24 April , assembly 25th. 1968. Do I guess both but more 251. So I could technically use the 253 in a bind? I don’t see crap out there for 251s. Even the rebuilt 251 on flee bay is busted and they want 700.🤨

a 7028251 is correct for your build date. You can find a core 251 for.$100-150 and a rebuild with correct plating is another &350-400. Make sure the date code on the carb base is correct as well.

Why you....🤨. all seriousness I would like to start out with one. I may still jump on the 253 as he is asking 120 but I would like a 68 dated one for the car restoration.
