I now have a quote for my body work and paint

http://www.mcautocreations.com/atypicalrestoration.html

This is a local company that I have been watching for a long time now. The price is for 12,700.00 I know this is real high, but this is a quality that comes with a price like that.
I have always said that it would most likely cost from 8500 to 12000 so I was close.
I restored the frame on this about five years ago.this has been a real slow build, but maybe now things will move quicker.

doesn't sound bad to me but I'd watch them like a hawk. I'd make sure they do everything correct, photograph everything before it goes in - in working condition too, close ups of everything from the gaps in the body to the bolts holding it together. If something changes and they say they ran into something get an estimate - sorry but I was ripped off and I hear the same song from too many people.

I'm willing to bet that for every guy like me that gets ripped off there is a customer that rips -off the shop too I just wish it would be fairer for all.

I too was a victim of a shady restoration shop years ago, so yes, I will be on my toes for sure!
I have seen some real nice work come from this place.

I was TAKEN for almost 20,000 by "friend " on my vista this year . It came back to me with doors not even close to aligned , many loose and missing bolts , windows leaking , and the most hidious flat black paint job I have ever seen . He is a local Columbus Ohio Olds guy and my only motivation to show it is to advertise his work...Just watch every step and pay as you go .

The owner said in the contract with me that this will take six to eight months. My last project was in a shop for over a year, and it still had problems when I got it back.
The only problem I have had with the owner of this shop so far is slow communication, but now that I mentioned it he has gotten better.

I will be taking this thing to the shop in mid June, and as soon as things start progressing I will start a new thread in builds.

I started dismantling the 442 today. I haven't touched this thing in a long long time, and I guess I wasn't really prepared for just how much was still left on this car. I should have her in the body shop soon, and I will start a thread in builds. To be honest I am starting to get a little nerved up about this

Maybe its just me but I couldnt even fathom paying 12,000 for paint.......I can get a show quality paint job locally for 2-3G at the most.

Depends on what the car needs. If there is no rust repair at all, then it seems high. If that includes some metal replacement, dent repair, welding, etc. then that might be the going rate. I paid $7K in upstate, rural NY (cheaper out in country here) for my 70 SX Conv. I had done the quarters myself (and trunk/passenger floors) but he did one rocker patch, the lower windshield/dash channel repair and one small door weld patch and also spent some decent labor time on repro fender alignment (lousty fit) and door alignment.

Do you get the materials for free?? Because once you add up all the paint supplies and the paint itself there is no way you are getting a "show quality" paint job for that price.

Cheapest paint job Ive seen lately was a Corvette my old man had repainted. No bodywork whatsoever, and he removed all the chrome himself. And the painter already had the paint for it. Price......4,000.

Most shops charge 40-50 bucks an hour for labor. If you have any metal repair your bill is going to be in the 10-12 range when all is said and done.

Unless you have someone giving you free labor, i have a hard time with that number. Not trying to be a jerk but have your priced paint lately?

I had to paint some interior parts 3 years ago and i paid $120 per quart of Sienna.

Good primers are expensive.

My closest friend for the last 30 years owns a body shop. He painted his car with some Maroon metallic from Toyota and it was ~$800 for a gallon. Not that an Olds color would cost that much. Im just trying to point out how expensive materials are these days.

I had my daily driver painted 2 years ago for materials and basic labor cost without markup and it was $1200. That wasnt removing all trim, no rust repair and not removing all bolt stuff ons like you would with a show car.

If you could get one done there for that price, please post up the shop info. I would have no problem paying to have a car transported there and back to get a show quality paint job done that cheap.

sorry.. but I Think that's a really a high price. You better get back a perfect paint Job in all ways for that amount. Mine is in the shop now. The guy just did my Monte Carlo SS for $2600 and its show quality perfect all the way. Mind you it was a super nice body to start with, but still he blocked it and much more. The estimate on my olds is $3500 to $4500. Mind you it took me 2 years to find this old time shop with a painter that been doing this for 50 years. Good luck with your car

I gather from the wide range of prices for paint jobs that we must be talking about different things. Preparation is essential for a quality paint job, and shops in my area are in the 85 to 100 dollar per hour range on labor. Materials are high, three years ago when I bought paint , and clear coat, I think I paid close to 1000./gallon. My paint job did not include a lot of additional work and I paid 15,OOO . I really believe what is going on in the local economy will dictate what you ultimately will pay for the final product, again Caveat Emptor!

I do thank you all for your opinions, it is helpful to me. This is a frame off restoration, replacing both rear quarters ( one nos and a good rust free quarter from John) to the factory seams. the body work needed is allot of dents and rust in the lower front fenders, right front floor board, left trunk, and dash at windshield.
The shop I have contracted with is well known for excellence, and attention to detail.
I have gone the other route in the past and after a year and six months I got a car back that had allot of problems and later the paint pealed.

I'm assuming he is not just painting he is restoring the complete body, underside, and frame. Dismantling and reassembling. If so thats a great price!!

I took my car to the body shop late today, so I will be starting a new tread in major builds. Please follow my progress and fell free to give your input or advice.
