You're right. I thought with the Olds 350 being bigger, it would be heavier. It's not.
Then again, the Olds weights specifically state "No Flywheel" so I'm not sure if the Chevies had them or not.

Small Blocks > Olds having no flywheels.
Olds 330-400 560lbs (5) low deck, w/accessories, no flywheel
Chevy small block V8 575lbs (generic for '60s-'70s motors)
Chevy small block LS1 460lbs (185)

Big Pig-blocks > Olds having no flywheels.
Chevy 454 675
Olds 400-455 620 [/B] (5) high deck w/accessories, no flywheel

http://fixrambler.com/engineweightchart.txt

The LS series are 125lbs lighter with the Aluminum heads, block, and composite intakes.
They weigh 215lbs less then the BBC.
The Gen III heads flow the same as BBC's and BBO's do. ~250cfm
Olds C head figures
The Gen IV heads flow ALOT more in stock trim at 300-320cfm.
Granted, not as much torque in stock trim, but VERY easily made with bolt on's........and they get great MPG.
Of course people will state any motor can with EFI, but the reality is not for $2,000 in a junkyard scrap pull.

Like I said before, head flow characteristics of modern GM blow away any classic engines'......for just $500

Can't handle the topics of discussion when comparing GM brands.
Got nothing to add to compare engines in a GOOD conversation so you start with the name calling.
Three assumptions that have no basis in fact.

The content of your first post, and its obvious lack of relevance to the topic, is the basis for my statement.

If you wish to discuss it further, send me a PM.

Yeah they people are right, a SBC is easier & cheaper to build.

IMHO it's more fun to build a motor or car that isn't "Off-the-shelf" like those Chevy and Ford boys have it

You have a stock 68 Cutlass and you lost to worked Chevy's. Yeah that's going to happen.

Throw some 3.73's or 4.10's if you have an OD trans. That 600 CFM Holley isn't helping you too much either. Put a 770 on that intake.

Block crossovers, hotter cam, higher stall.

I'm always made fun of by the little ricers at the track for racing an Alero, oddly enough they stop laughing after I beat them.

I smoked a 05 Mustang off the line once, if it was an 1/8 mile track I would have won by almost a car lenght. He pulled after the 1/8 and won (it was time shots anyway) First round, he liked left lane, I like right, I was in the staging lanes already, he pulls up and pulls BEHIND me

Bottom line, don't fight a fight with a car or driver that's out of your leauge

I just left from off Goodfellow, and all I can say is I'm looking for that Malibu!!!!
Ran the Cutlass and won by 5 cars then the SS and beat him by 2!!!!!!!
I haven't even set the timing yet!!!
I'm gone clean the plugs tomorrow cause the #1 was filthy!!!!

I can't lie everyone was very impressed at this lil rocket!!!!

ReDog you say a 770, you don't think that's to big for a stock rocket????

Stock cam and valvetrain.....yes. Way too much.
Your VE or Volumetric efficiency of a stock engine requires less then a 600cfm combined with the low revving capability of Olds engines.

Here, experiment with this.

Doing 14's ?? Modified Alero's fall into the same bracket as ricers once they do body kits, spoilers, fart cans, etc.
So do modifiied domestics such as Dodge Neon's, Chevy Cavaliers, Pontiac G6's, etc.
Some do look pretty cool though. I saw a red riced out Alero that was pretty f'n cool lookin IMO.
But I know most of your older guys won't adapt. This is similar but it had a spoiler.

Switching over to an HEI would not have made that big of a difference, unless the old distributor was so far gone....especially if you have not even touched the timing. It may just have been a placeebo/confidence booster. I had the same thing happen when I put in a K & N air filter. It was soooooo much
faster!! Just seems alittle odd....Wyze, on your other questions about this transplated Rocket, you were saying that it was running like crap. What did you do to fix it? Was it the carb that you had taken off the old engine? I'm just curious why doing something like putting in an HEI was like bolting on a supercharger. If so maybe I need to switch to HEI!

Before I switched to HEI I took the car to the shop and they said they set the points, adjusted the carb and set the timing!!!! The was on Friday, by mon it was running back like crap!!!! Believe me it was those points!!!!

My timing is still off, when I mash the gas it seems as the car takes a deep breath (falls on it's face) then takes off!!! Sounds like woomp----pause------- wrooooom it's outta here!!!!
Soon *** I let off the gas it starts farting!!! (backfiring)
I think that's coming from the carb!!! Yes I took that off the old motor that was making the same sound!!!!!

Before I couldn't get rubber, now it's super easy!!!making all the noise in the world and didn't see no smoke, now Im laying streaks on the ground and smoking **** up!!!!

Almost forgot to say something, I had a guy a my buddys job (NTB) set the timing!!! He said he set it to 12!!!! (stock) I drove the car around and it didn't haul *** like before so I had him put it back to 16!!! I think I just need to take it to a performance shop and have them hook it up!!!

You need to set it to 20° and go from there. The HEI uses a different advance curve than the points distributor does.

Yeah I had to do the same to my timing. My stock timing is 8 btdc and and I knocked it up to 10. My engine is in ok condition, just tired. You sometimes have to compensate for 40+ years of wear and tear. Well in any case glad to hear you got to smoke some chumps out on the street. Here in Baltimore, we have speed cameras EVERYWHERE, so it isn't as easy as my dad said it used to be! My sister's ex boyfriend got a $500 ticket a few months back for doing 90 in a 45 miles per hour zone. He had just gotten a new "chip" put in his 1999 Mustang and just HAD to test it out. Serves him right for driving a Ford!

It goes down here in St.Louis!!!!! We've got several places we go to run, most popular is Hall st. But it's to many people who come to watch, which normally leads to a huge crowd and the cops showing up before long!!!!!!

I wish you guys could see what a nice Sunday is like here!!!
St.Louis is very big on the Cutlass, all different years!!!! There are some many nice ones here!!!!!

I was just outside checking over my charging system ( which is not working properly)!!!
I've got 2 alts and both of them are only putting out around 13.50,
is this normal for a external regulater?????

That's not the alternators issue, but the voltage regulator.

Yeah there are no real places to race around here...the cops have been going at streetracers in force lately. Mainly due to an incident about a year ago. There is a pretty remote road right outside the city that racers and watcher would gather on, and about a year ago a racer driving something weird, like an old Crown Vic lost control and plowed into the crowd killing I think 12 people? Something like that? It was a lot. So ever since then this whole area is locked down and if a cop catchs you doing something like that, you go away for A LONG time. Just be safe!!!

Everyone is stock in a race.
You'll learn that everyone lies about mods done to their car in races

If you catch them in a lie , they will say something like ......
"When i said stock , i mean bottom end is all stock".

It's all part of the Hustle.
