For the current stable, I bought my 64 442 from a friend when he bought a different one, I bought my 64 Cutlass off ebay and had to pick it up in southern CO, bought my 83 Cutlass wagon off ebay and it was in the western edge of the state. My wifes 86 442 we bought from a guy in beloit, who failed to mention anything about oil burning and the cat caught most of it until it clogged

I haven't officially purchased my olds but the deal has been made. A friend I have known for 22+ years bought this car 12-15 years ago and did lots of work to it. The engine was replaced and was not numbers matching so he went ahead and put in a 455. He had he interior done and repainted (not the orig color but that had already been changed) . I "bought" the car from him 6 year ago to help him out of a pinch, but the car has remained his and in his posession. a few months ago he asked me if I wanted to buy it as he has too may other projects he is working on. I told I did but wouldn't have the money till I got my taxes back next year. whcih he agreed to with the condition that I store it at my house for the winter. (which I quickly agreed to) I have driven this car many times and already love it. I can't wait for it to be mine and have fun with it.

Thumbs up

I had always wanted a 66 or 67 Cutlass Convertible. My stepdad had a yellow convert growing up it was immaculate with every option bucket seats tac in the console even the vaumn gauge on it. Loved that car even liked the wire hubcaps with the tridents on them. Took it to prom even. Fast forward to One of the worst fires in the history of Santa Barbara. We were evacuated while at work and school. The car was still there in the garage so me and 2 buddies tried 3 times to get to the house to get the car out and some family pics. Finally got to the house and grabbed my family's photos and went to the detached garage out back to grab the car even push it if we had too... and thats when I saw the garage fully envolved with the car in it. Damn that was a sad day. Over the next few days we ended up loosing our house and my stepdads auto repair shop.........................

Fast forward almost twenty years and Im talking to a neighbor up here in Northeastern California on a friday night just BSing about cars and he says hey my mom has one of those cars. She told me to haul it off to the scrapper..... I have heard that 100 times and it always turns out to be something else. So propmptly the next morning we go to his grandfathers house about 1.5 miles from my house and I see a 74 pontiac appollo Im thinking ohh well and he tells me on no its way out in the back behind alot of sage brush so we through it in four wheel drive and go back and Ill be damned a 1966 Cutlass convertible all original with 54,000 miles on it. It had been parked because some genious had put motor oil in the master cylinder so no brakes back in 1981......He had called his mom and told her the story the night before and she told him to just give it to me he hands me the original pink slip and the keys and said "My mom wants a ride in it when you get it done. So thats how I got mine Ive get asked at least once a week hey do you want to sell that old convertible. I just smile from ear to ear and say you dont have enough money hehe.

Never would have thought about an Olds until I started chatting to a guy in Wisconsin who I bought some stuff for my Road Runner from via eBay. He sent me some pics of a 68 Hurst car he restored and sold through Mecum. So when I started looking for a convertible to keep the missus happy I included Oldsmobiles (which aren't a real popular car down here) on the shopping list. They seemed like real good value compared to the usual Mustangs and other GM vehicles. I was looking at 69 - 72 vehicles then stumbled across a couple of 67s. The more I checked them out the more I became smitten with them. One of the best looking convertibles with the roof up or down of any breed I reckon. Sold the Road Runner on eBay in 1 day (maybe let it go a little cheap) and bought the 67 convertible the same day. I still haven't seen the bloody thing but she's due to sail out of L.A.any day. I cannot wait.

My first car was a 1975 Cutlass S with a 260. It was white with a red interior, swivel buckets and floor shifter. It had the optional "passenger side pass through ground viewer" and the ever so popular "vented quarter panels" so nothing would stay in the trunk. I got it for $150 because my friend got into some law trouble and his mother wanted the car gone. I got it cheap, and it was almost beyond help. I drove it for a few months and almost died when the left front rotor lost the back side and was on the fins. That was fun trying to stop. And with all of the rust that was on that car the E-brake still worked. Go figure.
Well after 5 months or so I found a 76 Salon for $800. I borrowed the money from my grandfather and sold the 75 to my friend. That 76 was my first real love of a car. It was triple brown, not my favorite color scheme, but not the worst . I was almost 18 and we (my mother, sister and I) drove from Ill to CO for my aunts wedding. I found out that the floor on the passenger side (how about that) was very weak and when my mother put her purse (read CRAZY heavy mammoth bag) on it, it was resting on top of the catalytic converter and started burning the floor mat. That was fun. We made it to a shop in Nebraska and had it fixed the next morning and were on our way.
I found out what high altitude driving was all about on that trip. I was following my aunt up the mountain to the church. She was driving a mid 80s Buick (read FWD fuel injected) and not paying any attention to the fact that she was leaving me in the dust because the power had ALL gone away.
When we got back to Greeley I floored it a couple times and OMG what a cloud of carbon flew out of my exhaust.
I drove that car for a year or so when I got hit my a mini van and totaled the car. I had JUST had the trans rebuilt and had maybe 40 miles on it when that happened. So I pulled the engine (got a story about that thing too ) and trans and bought a 1980 Cutlass Supreme from my friends parents for $850. NICE car.
The engine that was in the 76 I had put in because I had a rod knock. I bought the car it was in (1975 Cutlass Supreme 4 door) for $140 from a friend of mine. He was selling it because every time he gave it gas it popped out of gear. ??? I had an idea of what the problem was. Motor mount. I was close, the mount was fine. But the two bolts that attach it to the block....not so much. They were MIA. I drove that for a week until I had a place to do the swap. No exhaust past the down pipe to the converter. Damn that was loud.
Back to the 80. I probably had more fun with that car than is legally allowed. I yanked the 260 after 2 weeks and dropped in the 75 350 with the fresh TH 350 and went. I put some slotted mags on it and a split dual exhaust. I blew up the rear end (2.28 open 7.5). Then I blew out the spider gears. Then I took CHUNKS out of the teeth. (that's 3 times). Then I got a 3.23 posi carrier from a camaro thanks to a friend of mine. No more blown rears. By this time the 350 was about on it's last legs. I found a J headed 455 for $300 minus intake, oil pan and timing cover. I slapped a mild cam in it, took the oil pan off the 350 and in it went. I got a new timing cover BTW. That lasted for a month when it spun a rod bearing.
Before I got the 455 I was helping my drummer buddy at a college house party near Loyola university. It was a 3 flat. We were hanging out in the back yard and something caught my eye. There was a 1970 Cutlass sitting next to the house. I asked a guy if he knew whose it was and it was his. I asked if it was for sale and he told me $400. WOW!.....keep it to yourself..... I looked it over and came back a week later to get it. It was a 1970 S post. 350/350 2.56 posi. The nose was a little caved in , but nothing I couldn't deal with.
I had a 72 Cutlass supreme that I bought for parts and drove for a few months. It was in BAD shape. The frame was cracked (yanked to the right when I hit the brakes), the front was smashed. But it had power disk brakes that I wanted for the post. And a TH 400, console, dual gate shifter and a black interior. It got stripped and junked and I made a couple dollars off of it.
After the rod went in the 455 I decided that it needed to be built right and that the 70 was a better place for it since the 80 had to deal with higher emission standards.
I saved up, built the engine my self (minus machine work) and did a double swap. I took my vacation from work and in 3 days I had 2 running cars. I removed the 350/350 from the 70 and put them in the 80. 1st day. Then I took the next two to build the 455 and drop it and the other trans into the 70. That 70 went 13.89 @ 97 miles per hour with the 2.56 gears going through the traps in second gear. It had 150 in it EASY, but I never tried it.
I sold the 80 to a guy in Elgin for $600 with a rod knock and the exhaust not hooked up.
I was working at a speed shop in Addison IL when a guy came in with a 1970 442. I ended up buying it from him for $2500. It had a rod knock and was missing the A/C but for the most part was complete. This was in 1995. I ended up taking the 455 out of the Cutlass and putting it in the 442. I stripped the Cutlass and junked it. I regret that to this day.
In 1998 I had been out of work for 6 months and needed money. I sold the engine and trans to a guy down the street and another guy bought the roller from me.
fast foreward to January 2006. I get a call from the guy that bought my 442. He needed me to get a replacement title so he could sell the car because he lost it and never transfered it. The car has been sitting all this time. He had fixed a bunch of things that it needed and put in a running 455 and TH 400 trans. But he was now in the boat I was in 8 years prior. I ended up getting back off of him for more that he paid me, but the work he did covered that.

(wow....long winded!!!)

Here's my 442 now.

I found my 442 on Ebay. I was chicken and didn't bid on it. The auction ended without reaching it's Reserve. I emailed the owner and asked to come by and look at it. It was about 200 miles from my house. I spent the whole day driving up to look at it, made an offer, paid him cash, rented a trailer and drove home with it the same day. Drove home in the worst rain storm with a huge smile on my face!

After being laid off for a year when I was called back to work I had to go to another department. I put the word out I was looking to build a hot rod or muscle car. A coworker told me he had a 70 Cutlass for sale for 1,200 dollars. It was all apart in his barn. I took a look at it and was amazed how good of shape it was in. Just minor rust, it came a with a 1970 455 with E heads and has some aftermarket parts, and the car was all their for the most part. I have had it for a couple of months now, and it will take a little while to complete but it will be worth it.

There were a lot of papers back there and when the firemen came they used a chemical extinguisher to put out the fire. Shortly thereafter the car disappeared. My pop inquired about the car and was told that the car was sitting in the back lot of the local Olds dealer and 35 dollars would purchase it as is, condition unknown. My dad bought the car for me and had it towed to our mechanic. The 88 only needed a tuneup and new battery. With the hole in the back seat, discolored dash chrome, and waffled quarter it was a thing of beauty to me and all mine. The 425 had power to spare and the turbo 400 shifted without notice. Believe it or not I still have the car but it soon will be parted out due to a very rotted frame.
Quite the story wow man would you sell the dash pad to me?? Sad to know about the frame unfortunately.

I figured it was worth a trip to Whittier.

I arrived at the seller's house and nearly turned around when I saw that the car was a 68, not the advertised 69. He had already removed the engine and trans and was planning to install them and the rear axle in the 56 Ford F100 he was building. I briefly walked around the car, then lifted the hood...
NICE!!!!!!!!!!
...whereupon I saw the red inner fenders.

NOW I started looking more closely. Both under bumper scoops were in place (but severely banged up). The car had PW, PS, tilt wheel, UHV ignition, and a 4.33:1 axle!!! It also had the correct manual drum front brakes. Upon checking, the engine he had pulled out of the car was the numbers-matching block with the correct D heads! The only things missing were the dual snorkle air cleaner and the original trans (the TH400 had been replaced by a T10 manual at some point in the past). The car had 27,000 original miles on it, apparently all applied a quarter mile at a time. A previous owner had also cut one of the floor supports to install a Hone overdrive unit (a predecessor to Gear Vendors), apparently due to the 4.33 gears. The car had been sitting in a field for several years and had bullet holed in the windshield and various woodland creatures living under the back seat. I spent the next hour talking the guy into selling me the engine and trans with the car. $800 later, the complete car was mine.

She isn't real pretty, been left alone in the weather for too long. But only 87k miles on her original. 2-door, 425, true duals........... mmmmm she sounds mean. sometime in the next month I will be driving her exclusively...
Now that is sweet, good find.

My first Olds ever is what my father handed down to me in 2002 a 1966 Olds Delta 88 4 door Sedan he owned since July 1st 1977, He blew the 425 4bbl in 1978 and dropped in a 1972 350 Rocket soon after, But around 1985 after so many miles being put on he finally parked it and she sat for 16 years straight and never started up just forgotten sitting under a car cover in the backyard, In 2000 I turned her over by hand and she was not locked up so I dropped in some high octane and new battery and for the hell of it tried to fire her up, Old girl purred but smoked like hell, I told my pops U better let me do something about that car man!! he said gimme $300 and its yours, HELL YEAH! And since 2003 I've been gathering a few body parts, Got the engine and heads redone at a cost, Ebay has supplied numerous NOS chrome body trim and interior parts to get her back up to snuff. Now this past summer I finally took her out for a rip as she is partially complete, And I must say she can haul major *** !!!!!!! at the sametime get the looks, Thanks everyone for the stories they're awesome....keep em comin

I just happen to stop by a family friends house for a visit. They told me that their '83 98 was stolen and next car they buy was going in their garage which meant their '67 Delta 88(with a rod thru the oil pan) had to go. Of course I volunteered to take it home and gave it to me.It sat 7yrs and in 2001 i had the engine rebuilt.

Well the story of my Olds98 convertible is somewhat different but turned out good for me in the end. My father had a collection of antique cars 23 Model T Touring car 29 Model A Leatherback and 52 chev Custom deluxe. before he passed away i sold the 23 to a guy in Quebec and my dad put the ownership of the 29 in my name and the 52 into my brother's name. he made sure to tell us that these cars were ours and we could do whatever we wanted with them ie trade or sell. after he passed away I decided that I wanted to trade the car for something that was more my speed though the 29 was a beautiful car I really wanted something from my era. I put it online for trade and got some interesting propositions. one was for a 69 cougar XR7 with a 351. The car needed quite a bit of work but he still wanted an additional 5,000 dollars because he said that the cougar had more potential value than what the 29 was worth. Even though I would have to put in more than 5,000 to bring it up to this value I could not see his logic. NO TRADE. Lots of time went by and did not have any interesting offers until a guy in Halifax offered a couple different cars as possible trades.A 56 Pontiac or a 65 Merc 10 passenger wagon. Well I was not really interested but I had to take my mom to the airport so I told him I would stop in to look.
this guy had lots of old cars A 56 Linclin he would not part with , a 49 merc truck he just finished would not part with , 57 Bel air ..NOPE then while looking at the 56 Pontiac (which I did not like) I noticed a boat under a cover that was taking up a ton of room in his 6 car barn. When he pulled back the cover I saw the 69-98 convertible. I told him that i would trade for that , not thinking that he would but he said if the 29 looked as good in person as it did in pics he would consider it. a couple days later he was at my place and after looking over the 29 we struck a deal.
So I guess you could say my Olds is thanks to my dad and I think he would love the car as I do , after all he used to own a 1968 Ford Country Squire station wagon that he bought brand new and could be considered a boat in it's own right.

I guess my story is similar to allot of people. I have been fascinated in muscle cars for as long as I can remember. There was always a special mystique surrounding the American muscle cars from the 60s and 70s. I bought my first classic car about 10 years ago. It was a 1964 EH Holden (Australia), a GMH car. I spent all my money over the years restoring it back to almost original, with a few tweaks here and there. My wife and I sold our Business just over 21/2 years ago and she wanted to go on holidays and always complained that the car just sat in the garage and was a waste of money. So after allot of endless naggggggging I relented and sold the EH. After another 1 1/2 years and countless hours spent pinning for my lost (sold) car she relented and agreed to me buying my dream car. Yipeeeeee. Boy did I spoil her that night. Anyway, I looked at a number of different car options, starting with a Black 69 442 then looking at Mustangs: and camaros. I didn't want to be like everybody else here in Australia so I kept coming back to the OLDS. I almost bought a 70 Torino SCJ but missed out by a whisker. I finally got what I wanted, a beautiful red 69 442 SC. 3rd documented owner, 80000 original miles, Numbers matching except for the paint, no rust, and as clean as they come. I'm in heaven

When it came time to start looking for a car i new i had to have an oldsmobile. Luckilly my dad knew where two were sitting, the first one i looked at was a 1964 2 door f-85. My dad had been looking at it since 1990/1991. We went by the house four times before the owner answered the door we talked a little bit and he said he would sell it, so we looked it over and it had a big hole in that area between the window and the trunk and some rust on the rear quarters and front fenders. On the good side he had the interior redone to match a 64 f-85 his wife had in the past, so the interior was pretty nice. When we got to the price he said $1500 and stayed firm. So my dad said we would come back in about a month to get it( i had to make some more money). In the meantime my dad took me to see the other car a 1968 delta custom, my dad says he remember seeing the guy driving it till about 2005 when he parked it behind his house. We talked to the 94 year old owner, he did want to sell it but he didnt know how much. The next time we went by he said some friends said it was worth $1500 parted out, we explained to him it would be my car and i was gonna fix it up and drive it, so we settle on $700( by this time my dad and i decided against the f-85). A few weeks later we went to pick it up when we got to his house we took care of the business and i got the keys. Then my dad and i went and got the truck and pulled it out of its parking spot and around the block to the trailer. With it sitting in front of the trailer we tried to start it and drive it onto the trailer but it didnt work so we used the winch and pulled it on, tied it down and went on our way home, by that time it was dark. On the ride home i called my grandpa and told him about the car. The pictures are of the car were it sat before i got it and the same spot a few months after a got it. and last i saw that 64 was still just sitting there in the yard with a 66? buick skylark gs with a 401 nailhead. I still went and talked to the Ross, the prev owner, whenever i was in town. he turned 95 in february and past away in the end of april.

The Red W-34 Toronado ("Big Red") I saw in on Ebay(Nov or Dec 2005), did not win it on Ebay, higgest bidder had a disagreement with the seller, after the auction ended, then the seller contacted me.
I rode with one of the former owners of that very same W-34, back in August of 1997 (Oldsmobile's 100th).
I told Marty if he ever was to sell this Toronado, to call me first, he never did.

Let's start with my 86!!! I bought it from a friend In 2005 who I used to work with!!!
He got it with dents & different color parts, looked a real mess!!! You would have never thought it would have a very clean inside & a strong running 307!!! Well lucky for me he had some of the bodywork done then bought a 300M, parked the Cutlass until it had a stack of parking tickets!!!! Not wanting to pay them and not wanting to loose the car from being towed he sold it to me for $800!!!! Since then I've added a euro clip, SS trunk spoiler, Hurst scoop, leather seats & rims & tires!!!!

Now the 68!!! I saw the add on Craigslist last year in Feb. with no pics but I called anyway!!! After talking to the old owner he gave me his photobucket info and I told him I'd take it!!! I waited to friday paid a friend to drive me about 250 miles to my baby!!!! I already knew it was

Bought my '65 Jetstar I from the Volo Auto museum in IL in 2004...can't say I'd recommend that anyone buy a car from them (spitshine experts), but I had no choice really, as they had it, I wanted it, and knew that I would never find another like it (I have not heard of another like mine for sale in the 6 years since). I unquestionably overpaid for it, but have never regretted the purchase. I borrowed a large chunk of the purchase price, and paid it off early. THEY bought the car earlier that year at the Atlantic City Classic Car Auction, right in my backyard. I'll always wonder what I COULD have bought it for.

Bought my '67 442 ragtop off cars-on-line.com late last year from an elderly gentleman in PA who had owned it for many years. Wrote a check. It was...and is...something of a diamond in the rough (MY turn to do the spitshine bit). I ended up paying a little more than 50% of his original asking price, and NOT by criticizing the car, but by waiting him out and coming back with a lowball offer 6 months after first looking at it. This one I may have paid a fair price for (hard to say, really...some days I really like it, others I wonder why I bought it).

Circa 1987,Senior in HS ........Walking into my part time job as a wash/fuel guy at a local diesel truck rental place and my buddy got his then Cutlass out for its 1st spring drive..........He had the Kraco stereo blasting cruising past work with the white letter tires, glass packs, and a fresh blue paintjob on it from his brother who was in the HS body shop program and I had never saw a cooler car! Before the end of the year my buddy had his girlfriend knocked up and was looking for cash for the uncoming kid and nuptials..........A deal was struck a loan was applied for and for the paltry sum of $1500 I had a rust free 1972 Olds Cutlass that I still have to this day,My buddy still comes over and visits his car when hes in town,Says that was one of his biggest regrets selling that car...........

In 92 one of my commercial accounts was struggling to stay in business. One of his customers brought in the Cutlass for a engine and trans rebuild. He refused to pay resulting in a Mechanics Lien. My customer offered me the car to settle his 60 day past due account. I didn't much think it wasn't worth the $3500 he owed, I didn't have a clue what a SX was. The car needed paint, seat covers, tires and ac compressor. It was either take the car now or wait and maybe get paid, maybe. I made the repairs with the plan of selling it. That was 18 years ago.

I used to live about 6 miles from there. Did you go there to get it or just have it shipped out to you sight unseen? They actually do have some nice cars there, but I do agree with you that most of them are over priced.

Circa 1993....
My very first car was a red with black vinyl top 1972 Cutlass S that I bought when I was 19 years old. I had no license yet. (long story) I bought it from a Master at Arms on Naval Training Center Corry Station in Pensacola Florida. For the huge price of ~$1100 which I even had to finance back then too. I taught myself how to drive in that big *** boat. Got my license with it too. It blew up on me driving it home to Chicago 6 months after I bought it......it only made it to mid Georgia. I got a ride the rest of the way from a Navy buddy to North Carolina where my Uncle lived. I had to leave it behind because I was too young and poor to fix it.

Fast forward to 2009.
I haven't been back to NC since 1993, and I see a 1970 Olds Cutlass / 442clone sitting in my Uncles garage. I was geeked since it was almost the exact same car I first bought 16 years ago. On my final visiting day he told me he was going to sell it. I told him I'd send down the cash and have it picked up via transport. I've had it for a year, and I'm not sure if I'm going to keep it, or sell it now after I just restored it. I had intentions of putting an LS motor in it, but now I'm not so sure I want to anymore.

You lose alot of money building these Oldsmobiles as compared to Chevelles. I'm really leaning towards buying myself a C6 Corvette and keeping my Pro-touring 1978Z28.

So that's the story.

I didn't look at the car in person, but I didn't exactly buy it sight unseen either. A friend put me in touch with former OCA Pres. and IL resident Steve DeNovi, who looked at the car for me and gave me a fairly critical evaluation. So there weren't too many surprises. When I referred to them being "spitshine experts", I was thinking more of the red overspray all over the engine compartment when they touched up the motor (right over rust and grease), etc. They did something similar with spatter paint in the trunk. They did a very cheesy vinyl cover job on the dash pad that I just got around to correcting last year by replacing it. And they did one other thing that I'd just as soon not mention here, since it remains an issue with the car and I'd rather leave that to the imagination (I don't like disparaging cars in public, least of all my own).

Anyway, what they did shows a lack of respect for the car, in my opinion, and I can only assume that this is their standard practice.

My story is a little different than most.

I drove big Oldsmobile's on the road in business driving around 85,000 miles a year. Never had ANY trouble with them until my 1965 Ninety-Eight LS..... The most beautiful car I had ever owned! The car ate starters! In six-months it went through six (6) starters. Each time the Olds dealer would send a tow-truck (they didn't have flatbed hauler's back in the day) and install a new starter. After the 6th starter, I told my friend Al, the Olds dealer, "I don't want this '98' anymore!" He had me go out into the lot and pick out a brand new one. Even trade, straight up!

..........

In the intervening 45 years the only Olds I had was a 1983 Cutlass Supreme 2-door.

.........

Now jump ahead 26 years to 2009. Now retired and living in the north-west South Carolina mountains. In the years between I drove mainly mini-vans and my wife drove really BIG cars! She currently has a beautiful 1996 Buick Park Avenue with 70M miles on it.

One day an ad appeared in our local daily paper. It was for a 1965 Olds Jetstar 88. I had NEVER heard of a Jetstar 88! The ad said “only 56,000 miles.” The ad had an out of state phone number. I called the number and the Original Owner answered! He said that he was going to drive the car to his daughters home for storage. She lives 20 miles from my home. When the car was at his daughters, he called and I met him there. There sat "Blue Belle" next to a horse corral.

........

I never had had a Ninety-Eight convertible and this was only about six inches shorter! She was beautiful! I drove the car and liked it. Steered too easily, but that's how Olds were set up back then. I made arrangements to take it to my mechanic. We checked it out, put it up on a lift and all looked very nice, for 45 years! The owner's price was too high and we haggled for several days and made a deal. I got my son to go halves on the price and the title reads “Donald or David.”

I'm going to be 80 in several months and I'm having fun “fixing” things and Cruisin'.

I'm having a ball..... Finally got my Olds Convertible!

Have met many great guys and gals on this forum and have had much help with many areas of “Old Olds.”

Thanks for listening.........

Thanks, Keith! I really am having fun! Right now I have the seats out as well as all the quarter panels. Checked the ragtop pump, cylinders, and fluid lines. All pretty good, tiny leak at top of driver's side cylinder...........

I'm having my front bench seat repaired. Broken springs and really matted down padding.

Best to you!

My 76 cutlass Brougham was my first car. I brought it in late 1979 and have had it every since. I am in the process of restoring it, as it has not been driven in the last 24 years. It is still in good condition only with surface rust that can be sanded out. It is still in tact with all of the original parts/glass and the interior is in good condition. Originally wanted a 76-77 Monte Carlo, as my mom had a 79 Delta 88, Dad a 77 Toronado Brougham, and a brother with a 76 Cutlass Supreme, which was a special ordered Cutlass for the dealer, who later decided he wanted a differnt color after the vehicle was delivered. His cutlass was quite a bit more powerul and a lot faster than other stock Cutlass, would beat any stock vette or camaro of this period...know from experience). I don't know what the dealer had done with this car/motor, as it was to be his personal vehicle...but it was super fast, especially since it was a smog engine.

After getting my car, putting on a set of cragars, and as the years went by, I am still glad my mother wouldn't let me buy anything other than my Olds Cutlass.

Found it in Hemmings. A guy's brother died and left him 16 cars in the will. The car was on Sunset Blvd. in California. Had my wife's grandfather go look at the car (we lived in Ohio at the time), had him video tape everything, inside trunk, under car, etc. etc. Everything looked solid since it was a West Coast car, offered less than he asked for it and then paid to have it shipped half way across the country.

Old cars have always been a weird attraction to me, even when I was a very young little kid and I collected nearly 1,000 small 'hot wheels' cars. My favorite things were the honeycomb grilles that covered the headlights, bench seats, and powerful, loud V8's. I went through a 78 Trans Am, and crashed my 71 Cougar with a 351C before I found what I had been wanting since I was about 8yo.

I had exactly $1000 saved up and I began looking for 'running project cars' on craigs list. Eventually I called the LAST number on my list and talk to a guy about a 1968 Oldsmobile Toronado 455. (I actually think he's a member on this forum who lives in Bonney Lake Washington . At first it was only one number on my list, but after doing some investigating online I saw what I needed to see; A big brutish frontend with a honeycomb grille that popped up to reveal the headlights.

Bonney Lake was about 4 hours from my house so I had a family member drive me up there knowing I may break down on the highway 2-3hrs from my house. We agreed on exactly $1000 cash and I headed on my way home. I only made it about 20 minutes before smoke began billowing from my left rear fender well. We pulled off and drove it to a random auto shop to have it fixed. Turns out the brake was perpetually engaged and nearly caught the entire tire on fire!! A week and $600 later I was back to get it. This time it made it the remaining 3 hrs without a hitch. I DID have to drive about 45mph as the tires had bubbles that made the car jump between lanes (not the safest thing in Seattle traffic.)

About a month later the car's problems overwhelmed me, the radiator, CV joints, tires and most notably the electrical draw that drained my battery dead overnight were too much. It sat for over a year until I had the opportunity to fix it. I put a new aluminum radiator in it, new CV joints, found out the draw was the key taken out not in the EXACT right postion and put some brand new Performance GT tires on her. I also painted it flat black

That lasted another month until I blew a head gasket on the way to college one morning I decided to just redo the whole damn engine, and saved up for about 3 months and now, in only 3 days I will have it back. Hopefully I can drive my beefed up 455 for more than another 1 month interval before something else happens :0 Either way, it's an amazing car and I will NEVER sell it. Bench seats, honeycomb grille, and a big, loud, POWERFUL 455 v8. Oldsmobile, there's no turning back now
