Help with the Body Tag & Engine number

Hello All,

The Body Tag

Body by Fisher

ST 71 34267LAN336377 BDY

TR 987 75 A PNT

03C

GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION

What can you tell from this Tag? Where can I look this up?

I also got the Engine #1280683 off of the Oil Filler Neck. What does that tell me? Where can I look this up?

Thanks,

CT

71 - 1971

3 - Oldsmobile

42 - Cutlass Supreme (thanks Joe)

67 - convertible

LAN Lansing assembly plant

336377 body number - not the VIN number and shouldn't match the VIN either it was the 236377 body that went down the assembly line

TR 987 Interior code - I think this is white/pearl in 71 notch bench (thanks Randy)

75 - paint color - matador red

A - top color - White convertible top

03C is the week the car was built
03 - third month of 1971, March
C third week of the month

the number on the oil fill tube is the engine number (thanks Kurt)

? That *is* the engine unit number. There is really nowhere to match that number to.

TR 987 indicates white interior with a notch back bench seat in front.

Actually, 42-series is Cutlass Supreme, not just Cutlass.

Kurt, that's what I meant but I was wondering if that number matched something on the block. If not then there is no way of really telling if that engine oil tube is original to the car then is there? I just noticed this the other day, that the number stamped on my oil tube was not a VIN derivative and did not seem to come close to matching any of my other numbers - that is then normal correct?

Quite correct. That is the engine sequence unit number. Matches nothing else except it was "in the system" somewhere. Through '67, the engine unit number was on the front end of the passenger side head. But in those years the number was also on the Protec-O-Plate. Conceivably could confirm that an engine is original, but like the oil fill tube, the head could be put on another engine. Not great places to put engine numbers is it?

Another thing about the number on the oil fill tube: The first number indicates the model year. If the first number is "1" and you have a '71, then at least the oil fill tube matches your model year.
