Number stamped on cowl ??? not the tag
While cleaning up the cowl area of my '68 Cutlass I discovered a set of stamped number/letters on the top of the cowl near the edge of the firewall.
They are upside down if looking straight down from the underside of the hood. So I would think they were stamped preassemby. They are just slightly on the passengerside from dead center. Any ideas what they are? Another day, another question.

The numbers at at the edge vertical and horizontal part of the firewall, facing the sky (if I had no hood).
At the top of this picture you can see the top of the voltage regulator just past the edge of the cowl/firewall 90 degree transition.
I haven noticed that they are the same as any other stamping. I will try to make some more out.
If you flip the picture it really looks like an RPO followed by a SS396 body number.
I have had lots of people ask what year is my Chevelle, maybe they are are right

Regarding stamped letters and numbers on sheetmetal, check out what the Camaro Research Group's website has to say:
Note that their interest is purely '67 - 69 Camaros. Your mileage may vary.
Sheetmetal was stamped with a Fisher Body "run number" by the stamping plant that produced the part. The run numbers were inserts in the draw die to identify the plant and the week of production and also served as proof marks to verify full die travel to closure. Almost every panel on the body will have a run number. The first letter (occasionally 2 letters) of the run number identifies the stamping plant and the number is the week (e.g. 40th week) of the calendar year when the panel was stamped.
Chevrolet-stamped parts (fenders, header panels, etc) only have the production week stamped on them.

I don't know what I this means, if anything, just another tidbit of info.
Could I have a SS396 firewall/cowl? Bizzare!
