Header alternatives?

Update; got the skinnies on my 67 and the look is just what I wanted.

Apart from still searching for a new rear end, Im trying to come up with an alternative for headers instead of spending $3k+ for custom ones for fender exit.

Anyone know if you can mount the manifolds upside down (probably switch sides) and that way I could make a turndown and go from there?

Why don't you just buy some cheap sbc fender well headers and some olds flanges and make your own.

I know it's not as simple as I'm saying but you can probably buy some cheap used olds headers cut the flanges off . Then buy some sbc fender well headers and match the diameter of the primaries of the olds headers and use the bends and weld them up. You couldn't probably do it for about 500 bucks

See, that's why I come here. Didn't think of that. Any idea how far off the chevy pipes would be from the olds flanges?

You will probably have to cut and rotate the 2 outer pipes to bring them in., the center pig nose on the chevy should be fairly close.

Just realized I could buy flanges, and I was told 403/455 should fit small blocks?

403 IS a small block Olds, and yes, exhaust flanges are the same on all Olds heads (except the late-80s 7A heads).

Am I missing something where you can't use the stock manifolds and just ghetto straight pipe it out the side?

You can do that but that's the lame way. The cheap alternative is sbc fenderwell exit headers and cobble them up with olds flanges. That's just as ghetto but an appreciated ghetto. Like lower middle class subdivisions.

If I could weld, I'd do that. Unfortunately I'm at the mercy of a machine/exhaust shop. Even then, idk if they'll clear the steering rack

I'm sorry but I have always felt that I can do it it's very rare I don't take on a challenge. Anytime spent learning or money spent is worth while if you can learn something new. With that being said this would be something that would only be worth it if you do it. I would probably take a better part of a week to get them mocked up but not entirely impossible. Another thing that you could do. Is get some block hugger headers and run them upside down then use a 180 J bend and run them over the frame behind the front tires. .all you would have to do is cut the middle bolt hole off of the header flange and re weld it on the bottom so then it's proper mounted upside down.

the more I look into it, the more I think I could do it myself. But where could I get the pipe bent?

You don't need pipes bent . You can cut sections of pipe and butt weld them. Like custom exhaust kits you can bend or you can cut and use pre bent sections to suit your needs. There is a bunch of how-to vids on making headers on youtube. Jesse james had some show he did with Austin speed shop or whatever it is and he made a set pretty much how I was saying.

Couldn't you get some of these pre-bent tubing kits from Speedway.com to fab your own pipes?

The only problem with that kit is there will probably be lots to desire. If you take a pair of sbc fenderwell headers half the work is technically done. Then you work from the flange out or so that's the way I see it.

That's a great cam but it's idles all almost like stock. You want the classic gallop lope the 280h is great. Outdate but works well.

That's what I've got. I was actually posting it for someone who sent me a pm. I would love an actual gallop though, but I'll drop the money later
