God looks after drunks

This happened last night at 1am. I was just going to bedand heard a car come racing down the stretch in front of the house, then thescream of tires and two big crashes. I called 911 and spoke with dispatch; theywere very calm and asked me to go check it out. I woke Helen and we went downto the road but did not see any evidence of an accident; no glass, no plasticbits.
Across the road from my drive is a cliff with about a 15foot drop to some rocks and then the water. When I did not see any debris I gota bad feeling and went over to the cliff and looked down. "No, no,no" I said.
There in the water, about 50 feet from the cliff, was acar upside down with the lights still on. At this point the crash was 5 minutesold. I called 911 again and told them they better hurry up, but they wanted myinformation all over again; get your *** down here now!
I knew I had to get in the water and help whoever was inthe car and was looking for a way down the cliff when a guy stumbled onto theroad. He had gotten out of the car and swum 25 yards around to my neighbour'sdock. He sat down on the grass and I could hear him struggling to breath. Hewas full hot (very drunk). I asked him if there was anyone else in the car andthankfully he shook his head. The police arrived, and began to question thedriver but he was pretty beat up and in shock. More police, and fire, andambulance. A neighbour's 18 year old son jumped in the water with a cop andthey checked out the car; no-one else in there.

The guy had lost control, spun around and gone over thecliff backwards. The rear end struck the rocks and the car flipped over intothe water.

God looks after drunks. He is alive but in ICU.

Good thing there was no one else on the road.

God must have gotten distracted... or the guy would not have crashed.

This is not divine intervention, it is the natural result of a drunken driver. With a pretty good outcome mainly because the water was not all that deep, and another innocent party was not involved.

That's my take anyhow.

There are people out there that are fortunate this drunken POS didn't hit them headon. In 1993 my wife lost 3 relatives at one time from a headon drunken driver. I have no patience for drunken drivers.

I doubt if God was distracted.

Are we to believe that God was active here, and he decided to... just barely kept the guy from dying or killing others? Teach him a little lesson?

If God was one notch more diliegent in "protecting folks" he might have...

Guided the car safely along
prevented the car from starting in the first place
had a friend drive the drunk fool home
directed the guy to a prayer meeting instead of a drinking session
etc. etc. etc.

Methinks the Devil had a finger in this pie as well.

This is the natural result of drunken driving, no more, no less. With a pretty favorable outcome, all things considered. Had the cliff been 100 ft tall and/or the water more than knee deep, and no one heard it happen...

I am glad the man lived. God takes care of everyone, but it's hard for me to accept when a drunk hits others and they die, but he lives. I don't understand why good people are allowed to be struck down too early, and it's one of my questions with which I could use the Lord's help. I've got other questions, too, but this isn't a religion board.

"God looks after drunks" is a saying here in Bermuda, is it not the same in the US?

After 7pm on Friday or Saturday probably 75% of drivers here are over the limit. We have a bad history of alcohol consumption going back to the sailing days (the British navy was constantly drunk). Common lore here is that in Eastern Canada alcoholism was called "Bermuda disease" because of the triangle rum trade (origin of the term Bermuda Triangle).
It is a curse for us.
Thankfully most people drive at 45K or else there would be many deaths and injuries.

Sometimes God allows bad situations to happen to bring glory to him in some unforseen, by us anyway, way. Maybe that guy will sober up & be an inspiration to others, maybe not. You must admit the guy was very "lucky" if there is such thing.
If He intervened in all human endeavors Eve would not have been swayed by Satan.

You have described a drunk getting lucky.
I don't think this was connected in any way to a notional deity.

The term used around here is "God takes care of drunks and kids". It's means HE takes care of people who can't take care of themselves because of stupidity or recklessness. I got your meaning exactly as you meant it. GOD doesn't really give a fig about people like these but they usually come out unscathed, hence the adage. My two cents.

I always heard "god looks out for little kids, drunks and idiots " or fools.

I'm not the most religious man. Grew up catholic but realize to not count on god . With out getting into my weird take on it. I have had my *** saved by dumb luck . Underage drinking and driving I had a serious reality check and I'm lucky it was with people I knew. I almost T boned a car full of friends I knew . After that day I won't have more than 2 beers and drive anywhere. I ain't counting my blessing because I can't rely on it so I just took a strong stance against it. I will show up to parties with a case of beer but I won't drink even a 1\4 of it. I value my license as much as I value my life and the lives of others. That guy is very lucky.
