Getting A Car that's been sitting running again.

Hey, hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving. Anyway, One of my cars has been sitting for 8 years. I want to get it running. I am replacing the Carb, so that's not an issue. What else should I do besides draining the old gas of course. Thanks. Tom

Changing the carb may not be an issue if the car ran well before. In addition you might consider priming the oil system until you see all the rockers flowing just to get things lubed. Prime the carb with fuel through the bowl vent. Remove the plugs, clean and gap, squirt some oil into each cylinder, reinstall plugs and fire it up.

Why are you replacing the carb?

Like Eric said, if the engine is free, change oil if it is questionable, pull plugs, squirt oil in cylinders, spin starter until you have oil pressure, replace plugs, fill carb through vent tube, pour a bit more gas into primaries, replace and screw down air cleaner, and start 'er up.

Replacing the carb may not be necessary as mentioned. If it is original to the car keep it, don't trade it in as a core for a rebuild.

Good luck!!!

X2 - Mine sat 18 years, did this, and it fired up on the 2nd try.

Edit : Not sure of your situation (Outdoors ? Away from people ?), but when mine started it blew tons of white, black, blue, gray smoke out of the tailpipe for a few minutes. Fumigated the entire neighborhood. After a few minutes, it settled down to normal.

MD, The car came with a tired Holley 4160c., electric choke. I just swapped it with the same new one just to get it on the road. I have a rebuilt Qjet that I will install soon. Am I correct that, being the factory intake, I just have a stovepipe to the Qjet and maybe some linkage issues to deal with?

Well.... In theory.

But that would all depend on what previous owners have done over time.

One thing that would make your life simpler would be to hook up an electric choke for the QuadraJet, since you've already got the wire all set up.

x2 on everything posted. Also, depending on where it was stored, you might want to check your brake and fuel hoses for dry rot.

Chip, It was stored in my garage, dry and out of the elements and on jack stands. MD, didn't know that was possible. Interesting option. What is involved in converting it to electric? Indy, the car is facing into the garage so the exhaust cloud will blow out the garage door. Tom
