Gas Tank Won't Fill??

Ever since I installed a new tank in my black 98 , I've had a problem filling it at the pump. When I squeeze the nozzle, it goes for a few seconds and then stops. I have to hold the nozzle only partially and slow the flow of gas in order for it to fill. It acts as if the tank is already full when I know for certain it is not. Especially when filling a 26 gallon tank, this can be painfully slow and it has also caused some splash back.

What is causing this??

Tank needs a vent.

Thanks Gary. I was thinking it could be vent related but the tank has a vent line. Could it just be that I have a kink in the hose or something along those lines? Could it also have anything to do with the charcoal canister?

If you can get to the vent tube easily try a little compressed air blowing it back wards Ive seen new tanks that are plugged or kinked during manufacture. I always try and do this before I install the tank , It can be a bit$h on some cars if installed.....Tedd

Thanks Tedd.

Could I just as well try this from the opposite end of the lines on the canister/pump side? I'll definitely see if the rubber lines between the sending unit and the main lines are kinked of course but I would think I could blow the air from either end..am I right?

Yes, try blowing from the cannister end back to the tank, gas cap needs to be off. If clear, try filling with it disconnected. Had an old Furd truck that did this until I found a mud daubber nest on the vent.

That is good info to have. I would have never thought a fuel tank vent could be plugged.

Someone else on here had a similar issue and the problem was how the neck was designed. There is an air vent in the neck and if it is too restrictive, the pump would shut off. Compare your old neck with the new. Enlarge the vent if needed, just NOT with a drill!

Hey Rob. Are you referring to the end of the neck near the fill hole? I could see that but will have to look to know for sure. I'll compare it to my other 98's original tank to know for sure. If that's indeed it, how would you recommend enlarging it safely?

Yes at the end at the fill hole. The hole could be enlarged by reaming out gently with a screwdriver or similar method.
Compare the two and see if they are similar.

Got it, thanks again Rob. I'll get to this next time I bring the other car home to compare the two of them side by side. Of course, this is more of a back burner issue considering I'm still only about 1/2 way through my engine overhaul/detail !

here is the original thread about repop tank issues, but unfortunately no solid fix...

Thanks Rob.

I took a pic of the filler neck on my OEM tank and then compared it to the new tank and it's definitely different. Although externally the tanks are nearly identical, the venting is pretty different between the two. I took a right angle screw driver and was able to pry the vent holes (the slits) open a bit more than they originally were. The car is pretty tied up right now while I'm doing my engine overhaul/detail but when she's up and running again, I'll see if it made enough of a difference. If I can't fix it by this method, I'm probably going to end up looking for an OEM tank. Now I'm kinda frustrated about how many tanks I've probably just scrapped in the parts cars I've had over the years!

I'll let you guys know once I get her back to the pump!
