Fremont Assembly Plant

They broke ground September, 1961. Presently a Tesla plant.

Thanks Kenny. I'm not sure I've seen that before. Good stuff.

I was a bad boy hitting the Chevys with rocks. They even stopped the train and went after me but never caught me.

I grew up in the Bay Area, and have driven by the plant many times. Fond memories.

Very interesting, but I didn't see any mention of the location where they were told to leave the build sheets in the car.

I.m a retired tile setter. I worked on the plant, in the 70s, when they added on to the plant, to make Blazers. They never made and as the gas crunch slowed the sales of them. Anyway, was able to walk a round, and see the cars being made. At that time the company I worked for was down sizing their trucks, because of the gas prices. They had just bought me a new Datsun, when I checked in, they were not going to let me in the building with it, said I would have to park outside. I told them, as I was running the job, I need my truck, and they finally said OK, but don't be surprised if some one sets it on fire, or does damage to it, I said OK, I agreed with them. One more thing, to me that was different, was all the restrooms, we worked on, were hanging from the ceiling, and they were huge, so they could have the floor room. They also gave tours at the time, and even, when they made the joint venture, with Toyota. Was a neat experience.

A lot of the OEM's still require non-company vehicles to be parked in different areas. Usually now, it's to the furthest-away part of the lot on company grounds. My wife left GM CCA (the renamed Service Parts Operations) HQ a couple of years ago, and it was still in practice. Don't usually have to worry about the shop employees damaging cars at plants anymore, though. That's a *really* old-school mentality, and the guys that did it weren't exactly the brightest bulbs on the Christmas tree.
