Fixing air conditioning?

I am looking to purchase a early 80's Cutlass Supreme, when I search online I find a bunch of them in my price range. But most of them do not indicate that the AC is working.

For the most part is it as easy as replacing the compressor?

If the AC is not working is this a pretty easy fix?

It would have helped to know you were talking about a 1980s Cutlass Supreme in your other thread.

While one could get an 80s Supreme without A/C, I've never seen one. Fixing the A/C on these cars is pretty easy and will mean replacing the compressor, drier, and orifice tube, as well as flushing the system and replacing the o-rings for peace of mind. Convert to R-134 and you should be good to go. RockAuto sells a kit that includes the compressor, drier, and orifice tube as a package deal. NAPA sells aerosol cans of A/C system cleaner that work really well to flush the system. You will need to vacuum the system down for a while after that to get everything out prior to recharging the freon.

Easy is relative to your skills with mechanics and understanding of A/C systems. Parts are readily available either aftermarket, refurbished OEM and possibly new OEM. Simply R&R'ing parts is simple enough but you need to be aware of the specifics. Such things as did the original pump blow sending debris through the system? If so a full system flush is required. The desiccant will need to be changed for sure. All the O rings will likely need changing too. If its simply a little low on refrigerant than you may get away with a simple charge. The system would need to be evaluated to see exactly whats wrong before a good diagnosis can be had.
