Fire broke out in shop yesterday morning, tried to put it out but smoke drove me out after empting fire extinguisher !! Fire chief suspects the "beer" fridge or stereo shorted out. Lost the Cutlass,Pontiac, aluminium trailer + everything else in shop. Just heart broken but everything can be replaced and only injury was me falling on ice & possible broken ribs!!!

 

Wow! Really sorry you lost your shop and cars. But your right, as long as your OK you can always replace the "stuff"

Sorry for your loss. I went thru a house fire in 1975 and just got the baby out to my 64 Cutlass and put her in it and locked it up then headed to the house. I left the front door open when I left and the flames followed me so I couldn't get back in, so I went around the back and the wife was out side with a garden hose I got her back away. Then went to call the fire dept. No cells back then and lost every thing, I only had my pants no shirt or shoes.
Get the people out first. Did you have ins. on your cars. Maybe the Home Owners Ins. will cover the shop.

Well insured, company had construction fence delivered today, cars covered with a 19a policy, [ agreed value] said there'd be no problem there, house insurance will cover shop & contents, but trying to make a list of equipment & tool, that's hard!!!!

 

Hope your ribs heal quick. A friend of mine broke his and it was very painful especially when laughing. Can someone inventory your tools etc since you have limited movement?you only get one chance to settle with the insurance. You need to think hard and accurately so you get what you lost.

 

We had a shed burn down, insurance company was awesome. Even cut additional check after remains were loaded in dumpster and found some additional items. Best of luck getting things straightened out and your ribs healing. We were given a tip from adjuster to google the item to get a value.

 

Our thoughts are with you...I'm feeling for the cars.

 

Glad you are ok and well insured. My cousin lost his garage and cars a little over a year ago but he was not well insured. Almost nothing covered. It was a wake up call for me. I was always well insured but I looked at it a little harder after that just to double check. I hope others here use your loss to think about and double check there policies.

As the others have said, glad you're okay, and that things can be replaced.

Gary suggested getting someone else to help with the inventory - a friend who's knowledgeable should be able to wade in there and identify darned near everything you had, and frankly, you shouldn't have to do that yourself right now.

Glad you are OK, ribs will get better, takes a while but it will happen. Get some help get a good inventory and start over. Sad day but will get better.

Also if you have any receipts for improvements made lately gather them. It may help get that back too. If someone does look through the mess make sure they wear proper mask, goggles and gloves.

That really sucks but I'm glad you're ok! I found out how well insured I was back in '13 when my upstairs toilet supply line broke while I was at work. The water ran for 13 hrs! & flooded the my house all the way down to the basement!. I have State Farm with an exact cost replacement rider on the policy. The total cost ended up at $65k!! & they couldn't have been nicer! I can't say enough good things about how they handled it! I hope your insurance takes care of you!!

Wow, sorry to see that happen. It goes to show just how quickly it can get out of control. Glad your ok! As Eric said if you have a friend to help you inventory, it will help note those things you may overlook. I have told the Mrs. I need to make a list of everything in my garage.

Sorry about your loss and injury but happy you are well covered insurance wise.
My wife is somewhat obsessive/compulsive about documenting things and insists that I document everything in my shop.
So I took smart camera and did video and comments on everything in the shop down to the cabinet full of fasteners, springs, brass fittings etc. All power tools from lathe and drill presses down to contents of ea. drawer of my tool boxes. Made a copy on a thumb drive and took it to the safe deposit box at our bank. I also noted brand names of tools as I don't want insurance estimating my potential losses at HF tool costs. I have photo documentation of building the shop almost twenty years ago including pics of wiring, air lines, plumbing, light fixtures and insulating.
Additionally we meet with our insurance agent (State Farm) about every other year and have a discussion about how well we are or are not covered and increased values from additions to either home or shop etc. While we are covered for cost of replacement we usually wind up getting a little higher home owners coverage plus the comfort of knowing we've done everything reasonably possible to be sure we are adequately insured. I grumble about it at the time but know I will be much better off if I should suffer a catastrophic loss as you did.

Pete, good to hear you and the family are OK, a slip and fall on the ice could have been much worse. (head injury would have been disastrous)

Sorry to hear of your loss. I've been there once and even with knowing insurance would take care of the physical loss the emotional stress is hard. My cars were in different garage but all tools, equipment and parts were gone.

Something to remember any tools that had lifetime warranties, Snap On, Craftsman and the like should be full current replacement value not depreciated.

A lesson for all here. Check with your home owners agent to be sure you are covered properly. If you are renting house/garage get renter insurance. Your stuff is not covered on property owners policy and renter insurance is cheap. Take pictures, videos and have an asset log sheet somewhere other than at the property.

When I had my loss garage was a rental and I would have got nothing for the 30K loss without the renters insurance.

Sad news for sure. My house burnt when I was a kid and it is tough to see this as it brings back some memories... Hope your ribs heal soon and I'm also hoping for a favorable outcome from your insurance.
