Factory wing trunk pics
OK thank you, I thought I asked a stupid noob question. Lol I haven't had a Cutlass since the mid 90's but hopefully I will be bringing one home soon and I'm going to need some advice. The restoration parts options have changed a lot since I was buying parts in high school.
Nothing yet but I wanted to see how the factory installed them on the 70-72 Supreme. When I put one on my car in high school I just winged it and put it where it looked right and drilled some holes and bolted it on. Would rather do it correctly this time.
You are going to have some trouble positioning the wing where the factory installed them on 70-72 Supremes because the rear wing was not available on 70-71 Supremes or convertibles. Also, the wing was not available from the factory in 72 at all.
There are pages in the 70 and 71 assembly manuals that show the correct mounting location and exact hole positioning with measurements for "fast backs" (holiday coupes and post coupes). You could use these as a guide if you want to mount a wing on a Supreme trunk lid, although the lids are slightly different between the Supremes and holiday coupes.
I thought 70 was the last year it was available and I'd have sworn I read they were available on the 70 Supreme. Regardless, I want to see the underside to see how they were correctly installed and the correct hardware they were attached with, even on a Cutlass.
I've been mistaken all these years. I thought they were 70 only on the Supreme but apparently they were dealer installed so that could be what I've been thinking of. Regardless, if I get one it will have one and I still want to see the factory mounting hardware inside the trunk, regardless of what car it is. In high school I used hardware store bolts and washers but I'm assuming this isn't how GM did it! lol
According to BlackGold on this site, the rarity of the rear wing is reinforced by the numbers. Only 294 cars or 1.8% of the coupes presented with the rear wing, part number 983190, beginning in January 1970.
The pictures Andy posted are representative of the factory W35 option. Three studs on each side of the wing attached with 6 nuts, the center stud being the longer of the 3. The only exception I note is the particular nuts used in this example, as they should be flange nuts.
