Experimental Aluminum big block......

Agreed back then sure, but I mean today we can all go out and buy turbochargers, though getting them installed would be a task. I guess my point is an old original aluminum block made by Oldsmobile is more unique in itself than if you found the turbos laying around by themselves years later.

I do not know of another aluminum 455 engine. The one in the car I had knew about for years and it had never been for sale. When the current owner was looking for one,I told him that I knew where one was but didn't know if it was for sale or not but would check. The rest they say is history but I do know of an aluminum 350.
Your username, 66 3x2 442, is that referring to a tri power 442? I know a guy here in washington that bought a 66 442 radio delete car with no engine, only to find out that when it rolled off the showroom floor, it was a factory tri power car, I had a chance to buy the car for 1500 bucks before he found out it was a tri power car, needless to say, I shot myself in the foot.
I know somewhat off topic, but regardless, I would love to have a piece of experimental Oldsmobile hardware!

Agreed, how much and where is it, for reference. An all aluminum 350 is something I could motivate myself to spend money on to build. A stock olds 350 like in the car now, not so much.

To those asking about the 350 aluminum engine. It is for sale but there are a couple of guys already in line. The person who owns it is on vacation and will be back the middle of next week. If the guys in line do not do anything,I will post it.

$80,300 + the 10% buyers premium, plus sales tax if it stays in Arizona, is what the 455 aluminum block Olds brought......
What do you guys think about that price?
Got to consider the B-J auction hype and the big rollers in town that inflate the auction prices for this event. Seems like some buyers think it's a priviledge and that it gives them bragging rights, the " I got it at the Barret-Jackson" mentality.

It is tough to judge pricing now-a-days, that is for sure. I think 325k for an auto W30 is insane, 150k for a resto mod is just as nuts. But if those two went for that, then yes, that car should have gone for more. But I think most people looking to spend big bucks on an olds will rather have a matching numbers car or something modified to their liking. I think if there was a 442 that came with an aluminum engine in it and this was a tribute car it would have gone for more. I guess I see how some of these chevy's and Hemi clones still capture big bucks when putting in a non-matching number to create a car that was like something originally sold. Just a pure example of supply & demand as well as what popularity can do to pricing. I do not begrudge a Chevy with a non matching aluminum LS1 dropped in it going for more money than this car - it is what it is.

Or, the buyers of the other cars had waaaay more money than brains. As I said in the BJ auction thread, these stupid money prices are all about winning, not the value of the car.

About the In Line Tube "W31" car being real: Dave H. and I called them out on the their W31 being real. We both noted the first pictures posted on their web site, showing disassembly of car for restoration. It showed the column shifter, no floor shifter tunnel, single exhaust/crossover pipe, no FE2 suspension components, etc. I noticed about a week later those picture were removed from the site!
It is not a real W31. When they first showed the car there was a note posted on the inside of the LR 1/4 glass stating this was a "what if" that if Olds had built this car. Lately it is no longer there. It seems they are slowly trying to "slip in" some authenticity as being a real W31 and that the car was really built with the alumn. engine! Man I love those guys.

The first pics I saw of the car before they restored it the car was a plain F-85. Can't find those pics anywhere on the restorations site.
Ethics don't seem to play a part in their plan.
Ask me at the Nats about that.
Brian I can tell you about having disagreements with jimbob.
