Exhaust system - '69 ninety eight

My 'original' '69 ninety eight 4 door hardtop came with factory single exhaust. We tow a vintage Airstream trailer...about 6k+ pounds. I know a dual exhaust would allow this engine to perform better....at least as good as our '71 Buick Centurion. I'm getting price estimates from local muffler shops of $700 to $900 which includes ether Flowmaster or Magnaflow mufflers. They are EXPENSIVE! I have Flowmaster SUV mufflers on the Buick but that car came factory duals. Besides I do not wish for the Olds to sound like a hot rod. My question is, friends, do you believe stock mufflers to be a decent alternative.....not perhaps as good a performance but better than a single exhaust?

Thanks,
Neil

You can use Walker Turbo mufflers that would sound a bit tamer, but flow better than the ones you listed.

You will need the S exhaust manifold for the drivers side to run the dual exhaust the correct way.

Here's a pic of what you will need.

Definitely go for the quiet mufflers. You can still get them at the auto parts store, but you may need to wait a few days.

As for the exhaust, try Scott at Classic Exhaust. I think he charged me something like $330 shipped for 14ga aluminized duals for my Delta, with mufflers. The mufflers he provided were a bit louder than I would have liked, so I'd suggest having him leave them out and get a good set at the parts store. He's also got stainless if you prefer.
He doesn't have resonators, but I picked up a pair of the specified ones for my car, new, on eBay for something like $60 each.

You need to check around more on that exhaust system your calif shops are ripping you off, I'd look at Dynamax super hemi turbo's, I have used both Dronemasters and Magnadrones before and they are horrid on a car that gets driven for hours at a time, they will make you feel like you've been beaten when you stop for the day.

When I used to buy the big GM cars with the largest engines, all of them had single exhaust. (88's/98's, Electra's/Wildcats, Catalina's)

To save money and improve performance/gas mileage, I'd have a muffler shop run just the other side and use a quiet muffler on the new side. saved quite a bit from a full dual exhaust, especially if the single was in good shape.

You can find good generic turbo mufflers either from the exhaust shop or at your local parts store.
