Exhaust Opinions Please

I am trying to decide what exhaust system to get for my 72 Cutlass S with 350 and was wondering if i could get your opinions. I really like the hollow sounding exhaust. Thanks guys.

Magna Flo and Dyna-Max are well rated. Flow Masters will give you that "hollow sound", but can drone at highway speeds, which can get annoying after awhile.

Go with Smithy's steel paks. Great sound! 50's era. They sound great on a 350 Olds (or 455, for that matter).

It's hard to know for sure what you mean by hollow. I prefer Dynomax super turbo mufflers because they aren't too loud but according to the reports I've read can flo very close to the real loud Flomasters.

Dynomax are the best flowing according to reports from horsepower books/magazines. I also feel they have the "True" muscle car sound from the 60's and ealy 70's.

Hey I am in the same boat, I currently have a 350 as well and need to replace my headers and get rid of the cheap glass packs attached to them.

Besides branding, does anyone have suggestions on header and pipe diameters for a whole setup? Would comp headers and a 2-1/2 inch pipe setup be a good idea?

I am looking for good performance without having to go crazy on expensive exhaust systems.

Thanks guys

I like the Torque Tech, or Pypes mandrel bent systems, I've had experience with both. As far as headers, Hookers, or M&J Proformance S/S headers.
Just replaced my Spintechs for Dynomax Welded Ultrflos, love the muscle car sound.

These pictures here are Hooker Comp Headers on a 71 Cutlass Supreme getting ready to flow into 2 1/2" Magnaflow exhaust. Don't know what it sounds like but if you run into "Will Not Fit Cutlass Supreme Models" on your headers, don't be alarmed. I have no clearance issues with the frame on the set I purchased, doubt the body will have any affect either. I don't know why the header people feel they won't fit. I ordered mine for a Cutlass S from Summit.

B-Mann, I would call Summit first and ask them what Thrush muffler comes with the kit.

I have straight duals now and flowmaster 40's on my 71. Sounds good but it does have some resonance at certain rpm's. I guess it depends what you want. If you like loud, glasspacks or flowmasters will sound great. If you like it quieter, dynomax will fit the bill.

I had hooker headers, 2 1/2 inch exhaust and flowmasters on my 69 Cutlass with a 350. It was too loud in my opinion.

It comes with Thrush Turbo mufflers and 2 1/2 inch pipes.

You should price an exhaust done at your local shop with the Thrush turbo mufflers. Then you can get whichever one is a better deal.

as far as a hollow sound,is this what your after?
don't pay no attention to the wife bumping her gums at the beginning as she is referring to her 90 olds touring sedan and I guess forgot that this was about my car

I am running 3" tubes straight off the headers with the Jones Exhaust mufflers with 3" in and 3"out at the rearend but haven't bought the tailpipes yet!and is a 455 but would think a 350 would have the same effect! to me it sounds hollow.I had the pipes welded to the collectors at a local shop and they supplied the tubes.I wanted aluminized and got steelIf aluminized I think I would have had the ting sound in there alsomaybe

If you want something different that I think will sound pretty nasty; I would go with a Pypes 2.5" exhaust system, but get a pair of Corsa mufflers from Jegs or Summit Racing. They're priced pretty resonable, and I have yet to see Corsa mufflers on a muscle car. If you wnat less interior drone go with the Red DB Series mufflers. You can always sell the Pypes mufflers at a show or on Craigslist.
