Escape from the hood!

While I've owned my 442 for almost a decade, I haven't had the opportunity to live at the same place it is for almost all of that time. Once I get my new place going, that will change, but here's a story.

Near the end of this past weekend's fun with friends, we decided to get the Olds running, and adjust the hood, which had come up during the last time I drove it. Hinges are tweaked, but adjustments made it open and close and latch satisfactorily. After getting it started and adding enough ATF to combat the massive leak it has, I went to the house to get an air compressor.

Upon leaving the front door, I see a tinted window, large rimmed, rap blsting suburban drive by, and when I get to the back, my friends informed me it had just done the "gangsta roll" (slow and looking to steal stuff) past the garage, and had thoroughly looked the car over. They guessed it looped around to check the house number, and we all were worried about the car's future safety in the garage there.

Although we discussed moving it to my new home this next weekend (100 mile trailering), the decision was to move it to another house of my family's in town where there is a spare garage stall. Bigger, nicer, drier, more secure garage too, in a somewhat better area.

Other than the timing being out of whack, and something funky going on in high gear, the old beast made it to its new home fine in full dust covered, expired plated glory. I then returned with my daily driver later, and made sure to remove the cardboard covering the garage windows so that people could see that there is now no car to be stolen and turned into some hoodlum's "ride" in there. I declined to leave a "Too Late, Suckers" sign on the floor of the stall, but the sentiment was there. I'll go check for signs of attempted entry this weekend when I head up there.

My house has the world famous "2 brothers" security system. Brothers Smith and Wesson, no home should be without them.

Won't do you any good if you're not there to dispense the medicine.

Indeed. Locks and alarms are for property protection, firearms are for yours.

My new place is in the middle of an older, big lots, subdivision with a lake, and I have a nice big backyard for my shop (planned for next summer/fall). Until then, the Olds will have its own 1 car garage in the back of the property once I get it down here. I think it is better off where it is now than where it was before I moved it.

I do carry heat more and more these days. Current one is a 3" 1911.

Even if you don't use this car get classic car insurance on it. Its cheap protection should something go wrong.

It is insured for the current worth of the vehicle through American Collectors.

Go to Harbor Freight and get one of those $29.99 security cameras that feeds a TV or DVR, and mount it over the garage door so it sees anything that approaches it. Doesn't have to be functional unless you want it to; these are not the fake cameras thieves laugh at. These are fully functional and will record activity well enough to ID a person.

Since the breakin last month there's one under my front porch and one mounted on the side of the house so it can see the doors. They capture the mailman and the neighbor's cat every day...
