Dyno'ed my 71

So after 3 years of owning my car i finally went and i had her dynoed i was hoping that my 455 would be around 300hp and 400tq. this it with a edelbrock performer intake, a edelbrock 750 carb, iron heads. i was told buy the guy i bought it it was bored 30 over and that it might have forged pistons. well what ever it has done to it till now i was happy with.

so my results were 282.81 hp and 364.28 tq on one pull and 281.87 hp and 367.92 on the second for my third pull it eneded half way when my throttle cable broke at 3790RPM but still got 269.04 hp and 338.61 tq to the wheels. i went and bought some Mondello heads hoping to see how much more life i get out of the motor. After porting and polishing the intake and installing the heads im going to do another 3 pulls and see where im sitting.

My goal is around 400 WHP and 500 WTQ

Almost 283 isn't so far from the 300 you were looking for. It will be interesting to see what the new heads, porting and polishing yeild.

That is very cool. Did the shop you dynoed your car at do any tuning for you? I've considered having my car dynoed. I remember dynoing my 64 98 years ago when I was in college. It was quite interesting seeing the dyno numbers and looking at the performance of the car with the spark and gas analyzer.

no i didnt have them tune the car at all. it cost my 51.23 for 3 pulls but a dyno tune would have been another 250. i rather install the heads and then dyno tune it.

as far as the heads im not going to do anything to them. but the the performer intake will be a gasket to match port and polish as well as im going to have the splitter where the carb is taken out so its a single square intake. and since i got another spare intake manifold im tempted of trying to do it my self. i can learn to PNP and save another 300 to maybe throw at a cam swap.

Dyno

My builder told me porting and blending my heads should bring about 25 HP more. My porting was done on the exhaust side. just realized you were talking about the intake. Sorry, don't know that estimate.

Most places here are 2 pulls for $100 so 3 pulls for $50 & tax is a steal.

Please post results post head swap.

You'd be surprised what you can pick up by "super tuning" your existing set up. You could get real close if not go over the 300 mark with your current set up simply by optimizing the spark, fuel curves and shift points (if Auto). Be sure the secondaries are wide open at WOT...you'd be surprised how many times I've seen this happen. Actuate it and check it using the pedal not the linkage at the carb.

i know tuning it would bring out more power but i was going to do that when im done installing the heads i bought as they always look wet when i pull them. as well as it seems like my carb is taking a ****. i really dynoed it so i can see where my starting point was before i started making the motor something i build. other then some polished items i put in rather then the rusty looking parts and making a steel power steering bracket rather then the billet aluminum bracket.

Those seem pretty close to stock hp/tq #'s. I'd also like to see what a head change would do then a tuning. What state is this dyno shop in?

it is in Jacksonville NC

and if im correct the numbers you are looking for are at the crank. these numbers are to the wheel so the dyno would have been about 15% less right?

I looked at crank #'s then I figured in 20% loss.

You're going to stir a hornets nest about how much drag a drivetrain puts on a motor. We would use the 20% number at my shop. Some people say no way. It should be 10 to 15%. Good luck with this.

i really dont care what the lose is i care what she puts down. lol so let the % war begin. but i just figured i share what i was putting down and then what the change is with my new mods then a tune.

Great attitude. That will be a good control to go off of. Good luck. When I posted my dyno numbers off a Mustang Dyno I got a lot of flak as to the REAL numbers the car was putting down. Here's a video of the Dyno run. Jim

I have no idea how much loss there is I was just going off something I'd read. I figure you are close with whatever % is used.

I don't buy into the "percent loss" thing.

Here's why:
If I have two engines with different outputs and swap them back and forth in the same car, with the same drivetrain, you are telling me that the drivetrain losses will change depending upon which engine is in the car?

Imagine engine A generates 100 horsepower. With 20% losses, that says it takes 20 hp to run the drivetrain.

Engine B generates 1000 hp. So now the same drivetrain takes 200 hp to turn? How is that possible?

I can see that at some point a person figured out what percentage loss there was with his particular setup, and then folks just applied that same percentage figure across the board to all setups.

You're on to something here. You may be the first person I have met to be able to explain this in two sentences. Everybody likes big numbers, not too many make 'em.
