need computer help.

Ok so my laptop decided to catch a virus. Partially my fault for runing with no antivirus for over a year. I decided to download norton antivirus. I have ran a full scan and system tune up etc. I got the norton 360 btw. My computer is noticeably better but my homepage still changes to some spammer home page. I went to internet options and did all that fun stuff and nothing. Anyone with experince here willing to help me fix my laptop lol. I'm not too computer savy. From everything I'm reading the norton should have fixed all my issues.

Go to MSN.com home page and click on "make MSN my homepage. That will cure your redirect.

Download the programs in bold and run:

CCCleaner, http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner check all the boxes except "wipe free space" on both the tabs and run cleaner. You might want to delete your internet history in your browser first (click on all the boxes except the top one.
Also run the registry cleaner.

Malwarebytes, run the full scan. http://www.malwarebytes.org/ download the free one.

By the way Norton sux.

Microsoft security essentials, http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downl...s.aspx?id=5201 run a full scan.

I can vouch for the effectiveness of MS Security Essentials...and it's free.

X2-MS security essentials. I run a full scan weekly. Also MS virus removal tool when problems arrive. They have a updated removal tool weekly. Every time I had a anti-virus,(norton, avg etc), then quit paying for it I got attacked.

Malwarebytes works pretty good for clearing crap off pc's, I've used it alot to remove viruses. I also do a profile refresh afterwards. Most viruses seem to hide in either the user profile directory or the SYSTEM32 directory. IMO freebie antivirus works ok depending on the one used, MS seems to work ok. For a licensed solution I would take Norton over McAfee any day. But I've been using Webroot Spysweeper for years. Haven't seen anything it couldn't whack yet.

You have to watch what you download for free from the internet. Nowadays, even free programs carry other programs that you don't want on your computer. Most of the time I "decline" and the problem goes away. If there are too many "declines" i just close the program and look for something else.

And yeah......apparently **** has a lot of viruses. I've never had that problem because my wife would shoot me if I started downloading or watching ****. The only reason I know **** has lots of viruses is hearing my friends from work mentioning it.

Copper, make sure you have your re-install discs handy and always back up your important files. I've found that some viruses and especially mallware just will NOT go away. I usually just wipe the hard drive and reinstall everything just to be safe. But I use a ghost program so i don't have to start from scratch.
Hope you got it all squared away.

How old is the shop computer? Most newer machines have the recovery stuff built in, you might not need recovery discs. Try hitting "start", then "all programs", then "accessories", then "system tools", and look for "system restore". This should get you started.

System restore only restores the operating system files to their original state. It won't do anything for viruses, mallware, and unhappy programs. Laptop manufacturer's got greedy some years back and stopped including actual discs but usually gave the option to burn the restore discs when you booted the new unit.
Copper, if you don't have the discs don't try anything until you do. Often, you can download the "ISO" file from Pirate Bay or other illegal site and then burn it do a disc. Although I would argue that doing so is perfectly legal since you own the laptop and have the registration key sticker thing somewhere on it. Probably on the bottom. If you have an old copy of XP laying around, you could use that but would still need to go to the laptop's website for the drivers.
System Restore is helpful but really only when an unruly program modifies Window's files and mucks things up.
