Driver door leaking in the rain...
Driver door leaking in the rain...
For some reason the driver's side door seal is leaking. Now I have tried to use a bit of duct tape to seal it for now until the rainy season here in the Pacific NW comes to an end, however it didn't work. So my question is do they sell the seal at auto parts stores or is there any other solution available? it's on a '90 Cutlass Ciera. Thanks!
You can do what the factory did, and with the door in the open position, place a piece of wood at the latch side. Lower the window glass, and push on the upper window frame to give it a slight bend toward the inside of the car. It might take a couple of tries to get it correct. I have done this on many cars in the past.
Do you know where the leak is, or at least the general area? I would attack it one of three ways. Roughen the existing weatherstrip in the area of the leak, apply a 1/4"-thick bead of black silicone to the existing weatherstrip and let dry with the door open for 12 hours. Make sure to taper the bead on both ends. Option B would be buy a roll of similar or slightly larger generic weatherstrip at Autozone, cut out the existing weatherstrip in the affected area and replace it. Option C would be buy a door weatherstrip kit from 1A or Rock and do it right. That could be pricey.
So I tried what Junkman said but the door still leaks really bad. Looks like the seal is split in several places. I found this online, is it what I need? If so can I get it cheaper?

Have you tried the dealer who is willing to look up the part numbers and scout around at other dealers or warehouses? Anything is possible!
Any good junkyards you can look into?
Can you post a closeup picture of a good section of the seal? It is possible a seal from a different car could work.
If the weatherstrip is cracked - get some silicone caulk, and fill in the cracks.
Unhook the battery and leave the door open for a couple hours, to dry.
You could also sit in the drivers seat, roll the window down, put both knees on the door, and pull the window frame towards you, from the top - tugging hard!
You should be able to see you're making the weatherstrip crush harder against the door frame!
Those 2 things should fix it!
