Door panel speakers - Post yours

I'd like to see where other people have mounted their door panel speakers.
I'm debating middle or low on a 70 door panel.

Not sure just yet how I want to do it, so was curious to see how others have done it.

Here are mine. They are 5.25" MB Quarts mounted in mounting rings. If you do not use the mounting rings, 6.5" ~might~ have fit.
These were installed my the previous owner, I opted to keep them there. They used to be black.

However I did paint them to match the interior, as part of the interior makeover thread.

If you have power windows, the clearance here is minimal. As in this picture, you can see where the gear is. It is about 1/4" away from the mounting ring when installed.

If you have manual cranks, then you will have another inch or so.

WOW!!!! Those look factory!!!! That's very very nice.

Thanks!!!! I had no idea where to start, but this gives me some direction.
I've seen those kickpanel options but they won't sell them without their cheapo
crappy speakers. So I'd rather put them in the doors with speaker baffles to
protect them from the elements.

I was just curious if anyone had them installed a little higher or not.

X2

If your door panels aren't already cut, I wouldn't cut them. But that's me...

Okay......well I guess the Ebay retailer was full of sh** then.
Thanks!!!!

Mind if I pick your brain with a few ?'s
1. I'd like to know what you had to remove to get them in???
2. E-brake has to be completely removed or just the side bolt ??
3. The cowl doesn't drop rainwater right on your speakers in the kickpanel wells ??

Do you have a picture of the drivers side up close behind the E-brake pedal so I can see clearance ???
Thanks!!!! You really tore that car UP and rebuilt it well......I still can't figure out how to get to some of the dash screws.

Want to trade!!!! LOL God I love black interiors.

Pics of my install here:

The E brake clears the speaker grille. You will need shallow mounting depth speakers with low grilles. I had some Kenwood 6 1/2's that I used.

Take off sill plate, remove screw (or two) holding the kick panel on. Pull speaker wire. Put speakers in new kick panel and install .

You don't have to remove E brake. Panel/Speaker slides behind it.

3. The cowl doesn't drop rainwater right on your speakers in the kickpanel wells ??

No water reaches this area.

Thanks Aces. As to the trade give me a while to think about it

Clearence for me is sort of an issue with the ebrake pad. I did not go shallow depth speakers. After I get mine screwed in all the way I will move the ebrake pad and should be good. This can all be avoided by choosing a shallow depth speaker and a flush grill. I have Infinity components and had to ebay me some flush grills. Infinity has shallow mounts as well as some other brands. Let me know if you fave any over questions let me know. Like Robert said he has no clearance issues and his look real good imo

Many thanks! Factory look was intentional, but I wish they were up and forward some more.

I have seen them in several different places without speakers.

If you have power windows, you might be able to go up 1/2" AND forward maybe an inch. If you have manual windows, you could go up a little more than an inch and forward about an inch. Gotta watch that regulator gear and the lower window stop bracketry.

I wish mine were forward more, but these are the holes the previous owner cut, so i just reused them.

I would not cut original door panels. Repros I can, but now days i would have a hard time cutting the metal...

Thanks for the pics, info, and link to your thread!!!!

Big help!!! I already purchased my 6.5" Kenwood components
and they are exactly 2" of backspacing needed. So I might run
into issues with the kickpanels after all unless I use spacers (which are included)
The only issue would be they would stick out 1/4" past the kickpanel then.

I also have to find the right SEM paint for my 1970's metallic green interior.
I tried The Parts Place's "metallic green" and it really sucked.
