Divorce choke

Quick question I just rebuilt a 17057256 quadrajet with the divorce choke set up ( I know nothing about this ) the choke pull off is cracked and I don't understand how it works connecting wise. How necessary is it .

The QJets starting with the number 1 are later model carbs with an integrated choke. The divorced choke was last used in (I think) 1968. Your carb number is a 1977 carburetor with an integrated hot air choke.

Here's a site with pictures of a new carb:

What connections are you asking about? The rubber hose vacuum connection or the metal pipe hot air connections?

According to this site there are two pull-offs: front and rear:

The choke pull off functions to S L O W L Y reduce the choke action after the car starts. If it's damaged, the choke will flood the car and make it stall or make it run very rough with black, stinky exhaust until the car warms up.

These are pictures of a 1976 carb which should be similar to yours. The first picture shows the choke closed. The second picture shows that when the pull-off functions (pulls toward the rear of the car), it opens the choke blade.

That video shows damage to the diaphragm that moderates the opening of the secondary flapper. That diaphragm is not connected to the choke.

Damage to that diaphragm allows the secondary to slam full open when you floor the car. In that case you will notice a bog or delay when trying for full acceleration. The damage will have no effect on granny driving.

What is your carb number (look for the number on the driver side of the carb).

The carb in your video is not in the configuration the car came with from the factory. The carb had been altered from the original configuration, so without knowing what has been modified it’s hard to give you any useful advice.

Good Lord, why did they do that? The great part about the later carbs is everything is adjustable with a screwdriver for the choke.

The 1969 400G also used a divorced choke.
