Did it again.............

Well..........."Just when I thought I was out--they pull me back in"
I shook hands yesterday on a '72 442 "S" model POST with a "U" code in the V.I.N. Not a perfect car, but extremely rare and very, very straight and solid. The car has some weird options, though. In that particular model
(I know it sounds odd) only a bench seat was available with auto. on column--no buckets and console. It has the original W-25 hood and breather that are both in outstanding condition, original SSIII wheels, A/C, and vinyl top. Mileage is SUPPOSED to be 75k and the guy I'm getting it from (a dealer friend) got it from the original owner---no documentation of any kind at this time.
I guess it is time for me to learn how to post pics, huh?????!!!!!!!!
I should have the car within a week or so. I will keep you all in the loop.

Very rare car. I'm partial to post cars myself. Even if you can't be 100% sure because of lack of documentation, I'd say a "probably" is worth pursuing in this case.
Neither the 751 Cutlass Hardtop Coupes nor the 123 Cutlass Sports Coupes with the 442 option could be had with bucket seats. This is pretty much a carryover of earlier years when you couldn't get buckets in F85 models. By '72 the only model called an F85 was a 4-door sedan. The "Cutlass" model took over as to what was previously an F85.
Seems most of the post cars have pretty odd combinations of options.

Not much can be determined about how many U-code post 442s were made. There were approx 2600 U-code Cutlass S models, but that was both the Sports Coupe and Hardtop Coupes which totaled 7923 in 442 trim. And the 2600 also included non-442 optioned Cutlass S models too. Pretty inconclusive.

I assume they mean 2 door car with metal frame around the door window, and a post up between front door window and rear side window. A hardtop is open on the sides between front and back. I also refer to them as 2 door sedans....but hey, I've been wrong quite a bit lately !!

A POST car differs from the hardtops in that it has solid framing around the door glass (which also includes a vent window), and has a B pillar. Hardtops only had the A pillar and sailpanel for roof support.

Here's the hardtop coupe (mine) - clearly see there's no pillars or supports with the front door

And here's the POST coupe. Note: the vent window. The post has chrome reveal over all the metal framing.

It's showing on my computer...
Here: I'll reinstall another pic for you.

EDIT: Hmmm, that was wierd. I installed it here and hit submit. Then the image in my original post disappeared. So I reinstalled it there too. Anyway, you can now see the difference. The hardtop was not just A bodies either. You could get the 88's and 98's in hartop coupes and sedans as well.

A lot of cars don't look too attractive in a post two door, but somehow I think Olds did a real good job on these. They managed to maintain a really sharp appearance, in my opinion.

Nope, you're doing quite nicely there! Interesting rule of thumb: the more metal you see, the lighter the car. The sedans (post cars) are the lightest, and the convertibles are the heaviest, with the hardtops (pillarless) in between.

This information (and much more) will all be on Wild About Cars eventually.

Don't get carried away with the vent windows. They have nothing to do with post vs hardtop. '68 Holiday Coupes have vent windows, '69 Holiday Coupes don't. Both are hardtops.

Nice find - a factory 455 post coupe. Tough to find. I really like the post coupes, so I'm kinda jealous.

p.s. - I'm still waiting to see pics of that GS ragtop you bought. Can you post a few of those when you get pics of the new post coupe? I'll even put the pics up for you if you can email a few to me....

Terry
