Crankshaft Position Sensor
Crankshaft Position Sensor
Hello, So i’ve been having problems with my car stalling on me while driving or even while it’s in park for about 7 months now. I took it to autozone the first time it stalled on me (when it stalls it turns back on after several times sometimes it’ll be soon after or even 20-30 minutes) But when they did the scanner only p0410 came up. My secondary air injection system. But recently it’s been doing it way more often and i took it to auto zone again yesterday and my Crankshaft position sensor came up. My mom doesn’t believe that’s the problem and thinks it’s something else. So my question Is it normal for something to not show through the codes if it’s not totally faulty yet?? I’m planning on getting it replaced soon for $340 but i was just wondering if i should see if it’s any worse underlying issue.
Here's something that you need to realize about reading codes: computers are dumb. The code you see could be a failure of the actual part listed OOOORRRRRR, it could be a net result of a different problem.
Also, what engine?

What you do is take it to a GOOD shop, tell them the issue you are having(not what you have found already), and ask them to diagnose and quote a repair price. Ask if they guarantee the repair will fix your issue and what happens if it doesnt. Then decide if you want them to proceed. Do not tell them what you have already found, thats their job.
Trust me i have. I’ve given it to multiple mechanics but they can never duplicate the problem in the shop. Even tho it always messes up on me like the day after they give it back. No one has been able to actually diagnose the problem.
What kind of car is it? GM didn't use a 3.6l V6 until 2004 (the last year for Oldsmobile).
I wouldn't take it somewhere and ask them to just replace the crankshaft positioning sensor. As others said, just take it to a shop and describe the problem. Let the technicians diagnose it.

The early EFI cars can be bitch to diagnose, won't even throw a code most of the time. What year is your car? I had a balancer start coming apart on a 88 Delta 88 with the 3800, supposedly a pretty common problem. I replaced it, did nothing to help the cold start issue.
Here is his first post for the same issue.

Hi so i’ve had my 2002 Oldsmobile intrigue GLS since July 2022, it was working great til May 2023 i go into a store and come out and my car is cranking but not giving that satisfactory start up. I sat for about 20 minutes that day and it eventually started up and i went home. It started stalling at intersections and i took it to the auto shop, they kept it for a month and said it never turned off on them. It started doing it to me at intersections way more frequently and i didn’t drive it for about 2 months. I took it to a different place and it didn’t turn off on them and they said something about an air cap not being fully on and that could possibly be it. I drove it all around that day (PS my engine light is finally turned off) It didn’t do anything. Well today i go into the store maybe 10 ish minutes and it’s not starting. Waited a couple minutes and it started. My car is over 100,000 miles and i’m thinking of replacing the spark plugs, my mom says she thinks it has something to do with the fuel. Please with this Info can someone give me good advice i know there could be many possibilities but if someone has dealt with the same thing pls help me. Would changing the fuel injectors be worth it or should i start with my spark plugs. ANY INFO OR ADVICE WILL HELP.

This is only a single data point, not a solid recommendation. My friend had a Pontiac Grand Prix with the 3.6 liter V6. He experienced the same symptoms as yourself, stalling unexpectingly. If it sat for a while, he could restart. Took it to the dealer and independent shops numerous times and they could not recreate/solve the issue. One suggested he remove and reinstall the fuel cap when the issue occurred, probably based on some code they read. After close to a year of this, ultimately he or someone solved it. It was a faulty crank position sensor. Good luck solving your problem.
