convert to tilt steering wheel ?

I am rebiulding my "69 cutlass, and am doing some work on the steering column, makes me think, a tilt steering wheel would be handy. I see it was an option in '69....question : What year Olds will be an excact fit ? ( with original steering wheel, switch , etc ) ? Maybe any GM porduct will fit ? If so , price range ?

Olds - '68 + '69 are a direct fit - '70 to '72 might need some mods.
Buick, Pontiac and Chevy might have different switches and ragjoints.
Expect to pay $200-500.
Unless someone on here has an extra???

Isn't the ignition switch on the dash in '68 and on the column in '69?
As far as I know any '69-'72 GM A-body steering column will interchange.

Yeah it's a 69 only thing from what I remember. 68 the ignition switch is on the dash still and they changed things up a bit in 70.

i was thinking that 69 and 70 were the same but not sure. it is not hard to change if you get the right one. i think 71 and 72 will fit but is a little differant. i am not an expert on what years are the same but know the 68 is differant.

actually that's what I'm trying to do ....cut the nub off...getting the bowl off is tough !!!!!....with the switch in the column, there's lots of little pieces, having trouble getting it apart, have to walk away,........ then come back......... then hopefully....... I'll get it !!

You have a much bigger hassle with the ignition switch and lock in the column. You also have to deactivate the steering lock.

I've got a non-tilt floor shift column from a 1969, $75 plus shipping. I may have a column shift tilt, but would have to check to be sure. John

let me get back to you on that. I fianaly got this column a part, what was supposed to be a slip fit, was corroded in pretty tight. once I got past that, I got it apart.... Let's wait and see ... , when I get this ''nub'' cut and smoothened,, if I can get it all back together....and if it works..... give me couple days

No problem, I've had this column for several years and it can hang out in the rafters of the garage until someone needs it John

2 questions : #1, In converting colun to floor shift, do I need to keep the trns linkage to the column make the steering wheel lock work ? ( like in 'park' only )? #2, Do you have a better steering wheel that will fit on my '69 ? Like a Ralley wheel maybe ? Aside from being cracked around the base, the horn pad is really faded

I don't think the 1969 has the sleeve on the column that rotates when the floor shifter is moved. I'd have to crawl under my 1969 to see exactly what's there. But even though it's sunny this morning the temp is low 20's so call me a whimp but I'm not ready to crawl under a car right now

The second question, for 1969 the sport wheels are very rare and expensive. If you don't mind it not being year correct the 4 spoke wheels from 1970-77 look pretty nice and I believe they'll fit fine on the 1969 column. John

1) All 1969-1972 A-body steering columns interchange.

2) All 1969-1972 floor shift steering columns have the collar that turns and the backdrive linkage. This was federally mandated to lock the shifter with the ignition.

3) You can convert a column shift column to a floor shift column by replacing the collar (technical term: shift bowl). Speedway Motors sells a thin sleeve that goes over the shift bowl (once you cut off the nub from the shift lever) to make it look like a floor shift column.

that's what I needed to know... wish I'd known about that sleeve.... anyway , I good friend of mine is a excellant welder and will weld the openeing up, ..... so,,,, if i just put everything back to gether as it was , and the original linkage ( which would be called ''backdrive'' ) everything should work ?

I have one from a '70, asking $250.00 + shipping.
