Cleaning Speedometer Cable

Hello all,

I have the speedometer cables off the car and would like to clean and lube before going back on. I have read that some have used brake cleaner or parts washer to clean out. This seems a bit abrasive. I don't want to hurt the housings. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Have cleaned the cable many many times with various solvents and never had a problem. The plastic of the outer housing/casing could be damaged??? by aggressive solvents so be reasonable with those choices….simple green, purple power etc. may be strong enough.

Once clean we’d sparingly put white lithium grease on the cable but only a film on the last 6-8” at the speedo connection. This was to prevent the white lithium grease from getting into the speedo and gumming it up.

Good luck!!!

Brakleen is the best thing ever. Blow it out with compressed air well.
For lubing the cable: put some grease in a sandwicg bag, poke the cable through the corner, and feed it back into the sheath. You can thank Prop Joe for that.
