bouncing speedo fix?

Hi, my speedometer is being funky...it bounces when the car is moving. When i release the gas after acceleration it bumps up for another 10mph...I actually got pulled over for speeding because i couldn't tell how fast i was actually going. How do i fix this? I heard it may be a bad meter wire/wire need more lubricant. Any ideas?

Sounds similar to a lubrication issue. The speedo cable can be disconnected from the rear of the speedometer and the insert can be removed from the housing. Lube it with an appropriate speedo cable lube and reinstall.

From what I understand, that's often an indicator of a failing speedometer cable.

Most likely cause is that the cable is kinked or binding.

Remove the cable, inspect it, if it is without any kinks or bends, then clean it, relubricate, and reinstall.

Worst case is its frayed inside the sleeve and may need to be replaced. Best case it needs to be cleaned and lubed.

Use this or something similar:

I've got a 72 Cutlass S. Just replaced the speedo cable and it's still bouncing and as soon as I start to accelerate it jumps to 15-20 and when I decelerate it sticks around 10 mph. Any ideas how to fix this? Is it the gauge itself?

I have been having issues with both the Cutlass and the Nova. Replaced the gauge and the cable on the Nova. True MPH up to around 45 MPH...then it flies up to 70 MPH+. I haven't even tried looking at the Cutlass fix.

I have a left over iPhone 6 that while I can't use voice or data (No contract) most of the apps still function. I have no idea why sine there is no contract on the phone. Anyway, when still in service I down loaded a speedometer app and use it in both of these cars. For an added benefit. The app also plays my loaded tunes and I can monitor those tittles on the same dashboard. Pretty damned handy. That leaves my "working" phone available for Waze...on highway trips.

If I get a speeding ticket it ain't because "I didn't know".

Sometimes new doesn't mean good, you need to determine if its the cable, trans gear, or speedo itself.

Bouncing Speedo

I took the gauge out and tried WD-40. It helped but it gets stuck coming down around 10mph. It doesn’t turn very freely kind of like it’s gunked up in there. Could a speedo shop fix that?
