Chrome Alternators, hmmm...

Last Saturday, I went to the local hot rod shop to take a look around at all the chrome. Man, what a selection...but the part that really caught my eye was a vast selection of chrome alternators. Now one of those would certainly make a statement under the hood! I don't mean to sound like I'm whirley-gigged out, but these chrome alternators are sharp and relatively inexpensive at about $125.

Any one out there had bad luck with one, and what do you recommend to watch out for?

I have not purchased a chrome one yet but have seen them on ebay sumit racing and a few other places I am thinking of putting one on my olds at least when the one I have on it now dies.I figure no sence in messing with it now if it still works good.

If it don't go chrome it

A few select chromed parts to accent things is okay but I recommend you watch out for chrome fever.
It starts slowly with an innocent alternator or chrome breather cap and builds from there.
The jack, seat springs, inside the frame, it never ends.

I agree, I've seen some cars at various shows that went overboard with chrome.

I agree on not going overboard with the chrome. But would also like to chrome my J2 single/large air cleaner cover (a rare piece these days - since most were thrown out years ago when car was new, in favor of the individual carb (small) variety).

one reason for the high amperage is if you have alot of draw as in say ac high end stereo extra lights they have say 80, 100 and some other output it helps to keep your battery charged and have your toys too.

Make sure they have the correct connector option for your vehicle.

I went to the hot rod shop to pick up the chrome alternator this afternoon. The connectors were right (3 wire), but the back housing just needed to be turned so that they would reach the wires of my car. Well, that would have been good to do if the bolt post wasn't in the way (I should have caught that at the rod shop before the purchase - can still take it back). I still think it's still doable, but will have to get creative and simply make it work... I certainly like the part. It's like a jewel in there!!

The alternator is 100 amps. The rod shop says this is plenty of amps for a older car (without a chip-set); it's enough to push AC, radio, lights, etc.

Thanks for the comments,
Dan

Got the chrome alternator in. What I thought was a back of alternator housing screw was the back of alternator ground screw... The previous owner grounded the last alternator, but in doing so also secured the alternator with a bracket from engine block to back of the alternator grounding screw. This threw me off a bit (lack of experience as a novice mechanic), but got the job done - removed that bracket, made up a ground wire from 12 gauge wire and connected it to the engine block.

It amazes me how sweet a chrome alternator looks. Never knew you could buy them so cheap and get so much...

Nice engine you have there. By the way, what is that gauge??

Looks like fuel pressure to me. One pipe to the carb the other to the NOS plate.

My alternator is a one wire but they set it up so you could plug in the remaining wires on my 70 442 and retain the stock look ...
