a carb question - service vs original

I have a question:

can someone tell me what the differences are with a service replacement carb versus and original issue carb?

are the components the same? What about the numbers on the side? Are they coded differently?

thanks
tim

Service carbs may not have the same jets and rods that the predecessor had, they should though. Numbers will be coded differently, at least the date code will.

The few service carbs that I've compared to OE did have different rods, jets, power piston spring, etc. If you can get me the numbers of the carbs you're looking at I may have the component parts breakdown. "Service" carbs are meant to be a usable (serviceable) replacement, not necessarily an exact duplication of the original.

Tim on 69 service replacement carbs that I have date codes are by carb ID number as opposed to being on base plate on original carbs
Also have seen 0's precede the ID numbers as well but don't know if that was a practice across the board or potential re-stamps

Cant speak on the internals

If the service replacement carb has the same part number as the original, then it should be built with the exact same parts.

The differences come in when GM changes the parts catalog to list a different part number carb as the service replacement. This is usually done to reduce the number of part numbers stocked.

Since both the carb's date code and part number include a digit for the year, it's easy to determine if a carb is a service replacement built after your car.

Also, in my experience, a service replacement carb won't have the two-letter "broadcast" code.

A service replacement carb has the part number of the original carb but the date code will be after the year indicated that the carb was used.
