Can't find my nuts - dashboard
Can't find my nuts - dashboard
Actually, they are screws. 1970 98 dash disassembly. The picture shows two screws on the very left side and two on the right side of the diagram. The text says "Remove screws at L.H and R.H ends of lower part of instrument panel". I've used a mirror and contorted myself every which way under the dash and can't find them. Any advice?
On another note, I spent hours trying to push the button on the headlight switch to pull the **** out. I was trying from the hole where the heater control was. I finally did it by cutting a 1/2" dowel to the right length, etching a slight depression in the end with a countersink bit and sticking it up from under the dash. Worked the first time. After years of working on my Harley, I have a whole drawer of "special tools" I crafted for working on the bike. This dowel is my first special tool for my Olds.

OK, I'm not an expert with the dash on an Olds 98 but I've removed several from that vintage of Cutlass. Here's an old thread with photos of the Cutlass ones, scroll down to the second set of photos and you'll see a clip in the metal dash frame. On the Cutlass there's a threaded stud that presses into it so there's no nut on the backside. MAYBE... that's what you've got on your car. Before you start prying and risk breaking off this stud you might get a mirror and strong flashlight to try and see the backside of the stud.

I just read back through your post. Can you tell us the location of these as described in the assembly manual? Since it tells you to unscrew them I may be thinking of something else.

My dash doesn't have studs nuts go on, it has screws that screw into the dash. I finally found the two RH screws in the very lower corner behind the courtesy light. I now have an idea of what I am looking for on the left side, but unfortunately they are no doubt left of the headlight switch hole similar to the linked thread where 2blu442 is pointing out the broken stud. I suspect someone before 2blu442 broke it since there was no way to humanly get to the nut. I took a break to do some fun stuff around the house like change the cat boxes before I attack it again.
Thanks for your help, here is the manual pic.
