Buy a 70 cutlass convertible
Hey guys and gals, I found a 70 cutlass convertible for sale. The guy wants 3500 obo for it. I always wanted this body style in a convertible, this car is 3 hours from me. Now with its age, the body needs work, fair amount of rust and the top needs to be changed. He priced all the parts out, 4000.00 for the metal. The engine and transmission is solid. Is it a fair buy for 3500?

very hard to say without pics and really knowing what the engine condition is. I have gone to see cars people say run fine, I run fine to if I have to run to the door of my house but i won't be competing for any 100 meter races.
THat sounds like a great price. I think cutlass convertibles are one of the best buys out there but that price is so low I'd have to go look at the car first. I always tell folks to buy as much car as you can afford. From 10- 15k you can find a Cutlass convertible ready to drive that looks great from 20 feet at 20 mph (a 20/20 car)
edit: had 1 - 15 meant 10 - 15

Only worth the price if the interior is in good shape, Take a road trip to see just how bad the rust is, if it needs fenders and quarter panels you could spend an easy 10k to fix. A new top around here is 1 K +...
It's crazy what these cars cost to fix...

I am, but I always wanted a cutlass convertible too.Love the way the 70 looks and the hips at the rear are sharp looking. Always better to play with 2. Just one gets boring. lol

I had one in the '90s in slightly worse condition that a guy gave me.
By the way, pictures like this one always make me suspicious:
He cut off part of the car, but made sure to include huge amounts of mud, trees, and pavement.
If it weren't for the fact that the right front is shown in other pics, I'd assume it had been swiped by a truck there. In this case, guess the seller is just a dope.

I'm guilty of buying a few cars with some degree of rust, so I'm not totally adverse to it. From what I saw of the rear quarters on my iPhone, I'd pass. As bad as they look on the outside, the inner and outer wheelhouses and probably trunk floor drop offs and mounting braces will be rotten too. Big big $ to fix via a proper shop.

Look for a better car. It will be more, but will save you more.
I have a 1972 Cutlass Supreme Conv. Virtually the same body style and a WAY nicer car. I'd consider selling it (I just got it, but have found another car). It is more than $3500.00 but is very nice and ready to enjoy.
