Build Sheet Info

I was recently made aware that Pontiac Historical Services can (for a $35 fee) provide all the information needed to verify and document a cars options and accessories using the VIN number. Close as you could get to a build sheet. Does anyone know if GM does this?

Yes Al, GM of Canada still has records for those cars either built in Canada or built in USA for export to Canada. There are no other records I know of that would give info on Olds built in the USA except what you find as build sheets or broadcast sheets. All the records GM had for Oldsmobile in USA don't exist anymore. I don't know how PHS gets their validation - maybe GM in USA still has records for Chev, Pontiac, Buick??

$35.00 fee?? Good deal. I paid GM Vintage Services close to 70.00 for my documentation.

Allan, didn't know you were still up. I like posting questions before I go to bed and when I wake up get on line and see what everyone has for me. So your saying I can get this inforamtion out of Canada? As I mentioned before my bride has been the only owner. And where I am resroring I can go down the list and check evry item that was/is here. Guess that's what you need to get documented. So I guess when GM dumped Olds they dumped the records.

This information does not exist for pre-1977 Oldsmobiles. You can't even find out where the car was originally sold or who the original selling dealer was, unless you find a build sheet, which would have a code for the dealer the car was originally delivered to.

For 1977 and up, information of the type you're looking for, although I don't know exactly what, is available from the GM Heritage Center, which took over the Olds History Center in 2003.

74.00 to be exact , well worth it because it verifies all imfo on build sheet, plus you get a whole bunch of imfo on models of that year:

The problems with Oldsmobile's record-keeping existed long before Olds went out of business.

When I first got into old cars about 20 years ago, and I got my first old Oldsmobile, the standard thing to do at the time, as this was before the internet was around, was to write to the Olds History Center in Lansing asking for any information they could give you.

If your Olds was a 1976 or earlier model, what you would get back is a very nicely-worded letter from Helen Earley with some sales info about your car, some xeroxed production records for the various models, and an apology that that was all they could provide you as no other records existed. If you had a '77 or later model, and you provided them with the VIN, they could provide you with a copy of the original invoice which would show the original options and original sale price for your car as well as the selling dealer.

Yup, sometimes I stay up later. Cuts into my beauty sleep somewhat. Al, you can only get the info if your car was built in Canada, (Oshawa) or exported from one of the US plants for import to Canada. That's about the ONLY advantage we Canadians have over the USA when it comes to documenting anything by GM.

Since your bride (lucky girl) has been the sole owner, she should be able to tell you where she bought it. BTW, do you still have the original docs with the car? Owners manual, POP, Bill of Sale etc? That helps a lot to document the cars provenance. A history of any repair/mtce would also help complete the overall picture of the cars in service life. Does this help?

Build Sheet Help

Thanks everyone for all the info I asked about. Actually we know the dealer as this is where the fmily bought all their Olds through the years. Falkners in Hazard, KY. They are still in business and I am going to contact them and see if they have any old records. Got owners manual and some paper work. It is a 71 442.

That would be incredible if they still had records of the car. If they are the original dealer under the same mgmt in the same location you might just luck out. Hope they have a large warehouse to store stuff in...... I've got my fingers, legs and eyes crossed for you.
GOOD LUCK!!!

The dealer's in Eastern KY-coal mountains. Nothing changes for years-same families same money. Will let you know next week. In the mean time I'll see exactly what paper work I have. Haven't looked at if forever.
