It's possible! Depends on where the unit was built? If it was Lansing, forget about finding one.

Pat thanks for the reply. It was built in Framingham, mass so maybe its possible. I just never heard that a bs could be found there. You got a nice looking car there!

My Fremont built 70 Supreme had the build sheet on top of the tank. One corner of it was very weathered but the rest of it was well preserved.

Thanks for the compliment on the car! Don't know how much you can see of it with the small avatar.

Anyways, Freemont, CA cars have been more prevalent than any other plants about leaving a build sheet in the car. The other plants i.e. Framingham, Linden and Arlington have been found also under seats or seat backs and under carpets. I think a few have been in the headliner also.

You will not find Lansing built build sheets. I have had one local guy claim that he had one, he has yet to produce it, when asked! I am sure that back in the day, if you followed your car down the line. You could have asked for it before they were trashed? Oldsmobile hourly and salaried workers could order a car from directly from product delivery and actually pick it up with no dealer involvement. IIRC my father said that stopped around the mid seventies.

Take the backs off your bucket seats and look up in there, even up around the top by the headrest mounts. Check under the front and back seats too. Cool that gmcdually found the one under the tank on a Framingham-built car.

I'm a huge '72 Supreme fan. Is yours a U code automatic or V Code M20 4 speed?

Mine is a U code automatic. Its a Supreme that came thru as a true 442. emblem on inside glove box actually says Supreme 442. its been bored .30 over so its now a 462 mild cam and headers with double pumper Holley. It really is fun for me. These cars are real headturners arent they? Thanks a lot for the reply, have fun in Pa!

Hope you find the build sheet. If it has a W-29 on it, you'll have evidence of a car that was allegedly never built. As a '72 Supreme hardtop guy, I've been looking intently for one for almost 30 years. Not optimistic about ever finding one, but never say never. I've owned 3 of the 77 V Code 455/M20 Supremes that were built, however.

You may find one on top of the tank, my buddy found his there on his '70 442 (Framingham). Your Supreme is not a 442, that option was not available on a Supreme unless it was a convertible in '72. A 442 emblem was never on the glovebox of any '72 442 as it had reverted back to an option on the Cutlass lineup. You would only have a Cutlass Supreme emblem on the glovebox.

Found on Top of Fuel Tank

Pull the tank and look, worth the chance. Your cars value could benefit if you found this documentation. May also be elsewhere in the interior as noted by others.
Mine is a 70 and is confirmed as a 442 by the VIN, whereas the 72 is not.
When I pulled my tank to fix the sender unit it was covered by the tank mat. I saw no BS and thought darn, not there- until I peeled back the mat and there it was! Badly stained but readable. I would like to thank whoever did that all those years ago.

My 70 Cutlass (post) was built in Framingham and I found my build sheet under the carpet. When they applied some kind of a brown paint (maybe primer?), while it was still wet, they place the build sheet with it and had all the brown paint smeared all over the sheet. Cant really see it clearly.

Think I wasnt clear. On the inside of the gloveebox door there are factory stickers with tire pressure etc there is a factory sticker with "442 Olds Cutlass Supreme". everything else on the car boxed frame , anti sway bars, 15 in wheels number matching 455 /th400 are all there . and yes on the Vin it is a "u" code". 3G57(Olds, Cutlass Supreme), hardtopCoupe
Oldmobile did a lot of squirrelly things back then.

You really need to find that build sheet to show what you have there, one way or another. I'm intrigued.

Can we see more pics? Your rear decklid, that mystery glovebox sticker you're referring to, etc. You have some nice options on your car, but all of those could be had on a non-W-29 Supreme. I've owned multiple U code and V Code 4 speed Supremes with rally packs and HD suspensions that were not W-29 442s.

No Cutlass/442 models had 15" Super Stock wheels until 1974 (except the '69 Hurst/Olds).

As Terry stated the 455 was available on non 442's. The Supreme & "S" could be had with the FE2 suspension along with the M20 4 speed, or turbo-hydromatic auto trans. In the last 45 years many things can be changed on a car, including glove boxe or the addition of a sticker or two. Paperwork is the only way to tell for sure for in 1972, with the exception of the W30, which was indicated by an "X" in the vin.

As I said anything is possible that is why I raised the question of the build sheet. Here is a pic of the glovebox. Keep in mind all screws/bolts from the dash and glovebox door are original; never having been changed.

Uh no, the 442 option W29 was not available on the Supreme hard top. You do not have one of one. They did not build any.

That sticker is nice and I bet original BUT if you look it is for the :
F85 Cutlass 442 Cutlass Supreme models, i.e. tire pressure for the A body cars.
It may very well be the 72 442 option code car- boxed LCA's is a good point- but you need to gather all evidence you can. The build sheet or window sticker would be the ultimate. Another feature of 442's is an overly strong trunk lid spring, really pops it up but I cannot be sure if the 72's were that way like earlier years.

Firstly welcome to the site. As beautiful as your car is it is not & never will be a 442. The W-29 option was not available on the car you own. Also Oldsmobile never offered 15" rims in 1972. All the options present on your car were available on the Cutlass Supreme & none make it a W-29 equipped car.

Again welcome to the site & enjoy your Cutlass Supreme.
