Block casting

Happy Spring everyone.

This past weekend I was trying to find the block casting and I think I found the spot where the stamp is supposed to be but don't seen any numbers there. Is this the correct spot? If there are no numbers, is it safe to assume this is a warranty replacement block?

Thanks,

John

John, there wouldn't be a number cast there but if your engine is 1968 or newer it would have the vin derivative would be stamped there. Since there's a drill spot there I'm thinking this is a pre-1968 block, possibly a 330, early 400 or a 425 engine?

Here's an old thread with photos. I'm guessing your engine may have a large letter D (425) or E (early 400) or just a several digit number if its a 330

I guess I'm using the wrong verbiage, I suppose I am looking for the vin derivative. What I am trying to determine is if the engine is the original engine.

There is a sideways 3 there, but that's about it. It could be a warranty replacement block that never got stamped by the mechanic doing the job. My first 350 was like that in my 76 Salon I had. I didn't know why it was blank until a number of years later.

It isn't. The VIN derivative stamp was required by federal law. They were all stamped before leaving the factory.
