Quick question. I've got what I've been told is the proper group 27 Battey in my tray, obtained the correct clamp and bolt. 2 pics below. which one is correct? The lip of the clamp curving up, or down? I guess I assumed down was correct but the only way this bolt will go in is lip curved up. HELP!
The first picture is correct except - the edge of the metal plate goes UNDER the edge of the battery. You have the edge of the metal plate riding on top of the plastic battery edge - place the metal edge under the battery plastic edge. The "clamping" force from the bolt will hold the battery in place.
The orientation of the metal plate is correct, as Kenneth noted. However, I believe the "edge" of the metal plate goes "under" the plastic edge of the battery - you have the edge of the metal plate residing on the "top" of the plastic edge of the battery. Insert the edge of the metal plate "under" the plastic edge of the battery. It should then meet the bottom of the battery, the bolt can then be inserted, and when tightened the "clamping" force of the bolt holds the battery in place.
With the metal plate oriented vertically, slide the edge of the metal plate under the plastic edge of the battery. The metal plate should then lay down horizontally and the bolt can be inserted.
I think your first pic is correct w/the clamp ON TOP of that reinforced area at the bottom on the battery. On the opposite side of the tray the metal is formed to curve up around that same reinforcement.

I agree with this. The clamp ON TOP of the lip will hold the battery in place best. This way will keep the battery from rocking away from the clamp during cornering forces. That's what Ihave done for the past 40+ years.

I have not tried it "under" the lip . Cleaning up and Painting the tray before reinstalling. However my dry run on the bench with the clamp on top does seem to make the clamp and bolt most comfortable.
