Battery Cable Question

In the attached diagram from the 1970 CSM, what does “A.M.T.” and “S.M.T.” stand for ? I’m’ guessing the M is for Muncie ?

IIRC, Automated Manual Transmission and Standard Manual Transmission (maybe synchronized Manual Transmission. Predecessor was an AST Automatic Safety Transmission)..

Correct, the "A" is for automatic and the "S" is for standard (manual). The cable goes up over the valve cover on manual cars to keep it away from the clutch linkage.

But he asked what the “M” is for. The M stands for Manual. A is “Automated”

AMT- Auto Matic Transmission

SMT- Synchro Mesh Transmission

You will sometimes see automatic transmission designated HMT Hydra Matic Transmission or JT Jetaway Transmission.

Actually he asked:

"In the attached diagram from the 1970 CSM, what does “A.M.T.” and “S.M.T.” stand for ? I’m’ guessing the M is for Muncie ?"

He did not just ask what the "M" is for. I could be wrong, but I took the meaning of his question to be: Why is the routing different for "SMT" and "AMT"? and that he was only postulating "M" might stand for Muncie (which as you said it does not) but was also unsure of what "A", "S", and "T" were for.

It's worth pointing out that it is better for the cable to be run on the fender from a heat endurance perspective. Otherwise, they'd all be on top of the valve cover like the manual transmissions.

Was curious about what “A.M.T.” and “S.MT.” actually stood for. I knew from others which way the cables were supposed to be installed. But looking at the diagram how can you be 100% sure unless you’re 100% sure what those 2 groups of 3 letters actually stand for.

All the factory parts books have a list of abbreviations used in the parts descriptions.
