This topic has been addressed many times, but just here to vent about a car I'm familiar with listed this week.

I recently (3 weeks ago?) helped my friend sell his relatively solid '65 mustang on Craigslist. Only issues really were some rust-through in the floorpans, and the typical bubbling in the paint along the rockers, doors, and wheel wells - which you never know how bad that is until you strip it.

It has appeared on e-bay now, but no mention of the rust issues:

If you want to do your own comparsion, here were the photos I sent out on the floorpans & paint bubble issues - jeesh. Maybe I'm over-reacting, but I'd feel p*ssed if I bought this car the way it's described! Thoughts? Seems like e-bay mostly protects the seller, what can ya do?

i agree with you...the seller went out of his to not show the quarters and floor but showed nice pics of the lower door and didnt mention any rust

 

I agree. But he did cover himself by saying "As Is", and saying to come and look at it. Was it in your friends family for 20 years? Anyways, it is a very deceptive ad.

 

If you ask a question of the seller will it automatically be posted?

 

Amazing that he would mention a small rip in the headliner as a problem but no mention of rust. Just "nice clean body"!

 

Hmmmmmmmm Nice rattle can resto under the hood too. Yeah I would say a bit misleading, especially the solid undercarriage statement.

 

I don't think so, if I recall it's an option to include your response to an ebay member in a listing.

"Undercarriage is solid" - not the phrasing I would use, assuming undercarriage includes the floorpans

"In same family for 20 years" - close-ish, 12 years, prev title date when my friend bought it from a car lot was 2001...

 

No. The seller can answer a question privately or have the question and answer posted for all to see.

 

were did you get the photos of the car?

 

I took a bunch of photos of the car when I ran an ad for my friend about three weeks ago. The guy who bought it is now listing on ebay...

I'm pretty sure they are of the same car, just after some cleaning and at a more flattering angle... The main (flat) pan areas were OK, the very front end and back ends were pretty rotted; at least on passengers side for sure.

 

I didnt get that it was the same car from the first post . I got burned on my 66 lemans I even asked about a few spots and was lied too.

 

Its a nice car if Mustangs are your bag. I'd term the floor board rust you pictured more than minor. Can I ask what your friend got for it?

 

Thats so sad someone is gonna spend that much on it and be totally disappointed. I had that happen to me once. I bought a old Cavalier Z24 in Florida and specifically asked if it was safe and dependable enough to get it back home 1300 miles back to Michigan. He assured me that it was in great shape, drove it daily with no issues. Well after getting all the way down there, and starting to make the trip back, the trans slipped into 2nd gear. I immediately called to tell him that there was no way i was going to make it home in it, and that he lied about the condition of the car. All he told me was all sales were final and it was a older car so it was to be expected ( I had only been on the road 10 miles! ) I learned my lesson about eBay real quick!

 

Buyer apparently liked the car left the following feedback or hasn't looked at it very close "Accurate Description As Advertised Easy to Deal With Thanks A+ & I Love The Car"

 

Maybe the new owner cleaned it up a bit. I've know lots of guys over the years that would clean up areas and match the paint. It's an art for some of these bodymen.
Even people play with the floorpan and the black tarry stuff. Throw a little dirt, a little black paint, sometimes they come out looking half decent. Hopefully a buyer will ask if there's any bubbling in the paint or holes in the floor pan. If the guy lies, then there's some negotiating room with e-Bay.

 

It's very easy to do. In this area, rust is a way of life. In fact, rust is called "Nova Scotia Weld" around here. Years of fixing rust buckets for other people has made me somewhat of an expert on the subject. I've been asked to fix floors with fibreglass matte and then painted it with a rockguard, to give it a rough finish, followed by a rubberized undercoating. I even have a hard time finding the repair when I'm done.

It is just impossible to judge a car by a description or pics. I would only buy something that I had laid my eyes on or had a third party inspect...Scott_442 and I were at the Charlotte Car show yesterday and watching the cars roll across the Auction block when this seemingly beautiful GTX came to the line. We were sitting about 25-30 ft from it and and could see bubbling paint on the rear quarters as it went by. The auctioneers became visibly frustrated as they couldn't budge the bidding over $17,500.00. They kept talking about how it was rust free and how they personally new the owner and he would never bring anything to the auction that wasn't perfect. Obviously they were looking at the car from further than 25 feet!

 

A car like the one in your avatar would be fixed the correct way. I'd use steel floor pans. My cheating method is for cars that aren't worth a whole lot and the owner is trying to get rid of them quickly and cheaply. I hate doing it because it feels like I'm "finger painting" the job, but it works for the owners of the cars.

 

i hate when people try to take advantage of others, like this guy. that rustang is probably only worth 5000.00 or less.
