I don't recognize the two square plates on either side of the intake with circular looking holes in them (I think they are holes). One is in the position of the EGR on later model cars, the other is where the choke tube might be on an older manifold set up for divorced choke. Really weird though.

I lurk around the AACA forums and saw that manifold for sale a couple of months ago.
This explains what it is a little better.

ok so I guess they are 'heat riser block-offs". Makes sense, being an experimental unit and all that they would want to be able to use it in differing configurations, makes it more flexible as a tool.

Yes, those are exactly the same as the ones used on the 1966 L69 3x2bbl intake. You can block the heat riser for more power or rotate the plates 90 degress and allow heat under the carb for cool weather driving. Note that the plates on the ebay aluminum intake are cast iron, like the ones on the 66 intake. I always wondered why this technique was never used by anyone else. It sure beats pounding wadded up aluminum foil into the crossover.

I have heard of people pouring molten metal into these ports and letting the excess run out the siamesed exhaust ports, then taking out the excess to re-dress the ports to desired shape/size. I say they use old aluminum wheels/parts or else something that Dick Miller sells in ingot form similar with a slightly lower melting point. Never done it though.
