Air cleaner lid gasket

Does any one repo these? I had a lid re chromed several years ago, and of course the rubber seal had to be removed, I have yet to find anyone who reproduces these.

I've never seen an air cleaner with a gasket between the lid and the base, only between the base and where it sits around the carburetor. I've always just set the lid on the base and tightened down the wing nut.

Are you guys kidding me? Go look at your cars. Pull the lid off the air cleaner and take a look at what's jammed around that recessed ring all the way around. I have never seen an air cleaner lid without that rubber seal.

I just pulled the lid of my cleaner and found nothing. If you tighten the lid properly there is not much that can get through that otherwise wouldn't get through the filter. On all my cars I have never seen or used one.

Maybe cause I don't use stock air cleaners.

By George you are right! Talk about learning something new every day. I never noticed it before. There's one on both of my old cars. I've never replaced one, either, but both are in pretty good shape.

But if it is gone, why worry about it? What purpose does it serve? If it leaks or isn't there, It's still before the air filter. I don't know what's the reason for it.

Did not find there, paint not needed for a chrome air cleaner lid.

My original has it, ('69 W31) and the black lid that I had stripped and chrome plated had it before it was done. I have seen them on all Olds that I have owned, '68 Delta Custom, '69, '70, (2) '71's, '73, 76 & 77 (Cutlass') Can't remember on my 2bbl '66 or 231 equipped '79. '79 Toro had it, as do my friends Oldsmobiles.

Well, it sits in rough condition in my garage, pics of a bad lacquer paint job from the 80's do it no good! It's Tahition Turquoise w/black hood stripes and interior.

pretty much. Going through the Fusick catalog to see what to order this year, mostly small stuff, maybe floorpans.

It's stripped down to the shortblock, with the radiator support removed (repainted) along with the grilles, headlight surrounds etc. They had been redone also, as are most underhood items.

Well, here's my guess at the reason it's there. The air cleaner lid obviously must seal to the top of the air filter element. To allow for manufacturing tolerances, the design always needs to leave a gap between the lid and the air cleaner bottom. I suspect that at certain gap sizes, this can lead to a whistle or other undesirable acoustics. Also, any gap there negates the function of the Thermactor hot air inlet for warmup. The foam is an easy way to prevent this.

The 1970-72 O.A.I. lid doesn't need any foam because it only seals to the top of the air filter rubber end ring.

little hard to follow that, but my W31 has the seal/gasket also. as do 68-72 base GTOs (I'll exclude those 2bbl ones though). BTW, the chrome lid on 68-70 GTO air cleaners is the same lid on 68-69 OAI air cleaners

why thats a familiar condition. Mine's about the same, although it was running 2.5 years ago until I tore the front end sheetmetal off it for rust repair. Then I moved and sadly, it's kinda sat since then.

yeah all my chrome lid seals must have been tossed by the waste side before I got them.
But all my non ram air cleaners have the seal.

Let's not confuse the 68-69 O.A.I. air cleaners (which are full air cleaner housings) with the 70-72 O.A.I. air cleaners (where the lid only seals to the air filter element).

I went out one day, and pulled the radiator top plate to sand and repaint, after that, it was "I'll unbolt that and paint it" and before you know it it was half tore apart!

The base has paint. Try one of the rubber dealers Steel A&M etc... I did mine a few years ago. Ill have to look to see exactly where I sourced the gasket. Could have sworn it was YO or Fusick.

I already painted the base, and Rocket Vapor provided a link to SoffSeal.

The 66 and 67 OAI air filter housings have a rubber ring on the lid.
