72'Cutlass Rear Bumper

In my search for 57' Olds parts, a guy showed me a 72' Cutlass rear bumper, he claimed it was rare because it only had 2 slots on each side for tail lights vs most that have 3 slots????

Is he pulling my leg???

You must be walking with a limp if you believed him. The 71/72 bumpers are identical and have 2 horizontal slots for the upper lower lights.

The actual lenses for the 72 have 3 partitions vs the 71 which is just one lens surface.

Tell him you have an ultra rare 50¢ piece worth 248,000.00 you'll trade him straight across for the bumper.

Tell him he needs to stick with what he knows.

Hey raider, he's sticking with those chebys, he's also my friend & body guy that sold me this 57' Olds, we were strolling thru his personal bone yard last week when we stumbled across that bumper.

You can show him this pic of the 'uber rare mint condition' dual cutout bumper I found in my personal storage shed out back! It is triple plate and is proper for 71/72 Olds W30

The one on the car is OEM (born with the car, but rechromed). Only difference is the cutouts.

HaHa, Allan those are 2 pretty bumpers!!!! I'm gonna take him those pics and take my camera as well, cause I think he's wrong about what year his bumper really is!!!
We tend to beat each other up a little, when a mistake is made!!!!

Thanks for the pics Allan, I had 30 min. of fun with my friend!!!

It seems that "I" was not listening properly!!!!! He claims to have said that bumper must be rare because he had such a hard time finding a replacement 20 or 25 years ago!!! It was something to do with the taillight slots!!! He did admit to maybe saying 71'/72', he just knew it was a 70' something and that he had a hard time finding a replacement!!!

I believe it to be a 70' rear bumper, there were several others there and everyone got in a few digs!!!!

You were listening just fine. HE was not remembering properly. Every single 1971/72 Cutlass/442 rear bumper (except for wagons) has EXACTLY the same taillight cutouts. In fact, the only differences in those years are the two notches for the dual exhaust trumpets.

If he was trying to find a bumper with three slots per side, yeah that WOULD be pretty rare, like one-of-none.

Hey Joe, we have a lot of discussions about who was listening and who's remembering!!!!!

Anytime I get to stroll with him, thru his personal bone yard (about 8 acres), I laugh my butt off!!! It's a stroll down "his" memory lane!!! He'll pick something up and tell ya' where it came from and why he kept it!!!! Actually, he's never thrown anything away!!!! I'm gonna get my chain saw and rescue this Olds!!!

He sent me on a 20 mile wild goose chase, to see an Early Bronco for sale, when I got there it was an International Scout!!! I've hammered him about sending me to look at a "combine"!! He says all those 4x4's look the same to him!!!!

You believe correctly - that is a 70 f85/Cutlass/Cutlass Supreme/442 bumper. It would be worth something if it was a rallye 350 bumper.

Wanna have some more fun with him? Ask him if it will fit not only the coupes and verts but sedans. All 3 is the right answer. Like Joe said - only the wagons were different. Then you could ask him if that bumper was ever color coded to the car (which you now know is true - rallye350 was Sebring yellow with matching bumpers and wheels)

The cutout bumpers were for the W30 cars. You could buy them from the dealer if wanted and install them. I think they look awesome and even though it's technically not correct for my car I'm putting it in. I run the dual exhaust with a block off plate on the crossover side just like the factory did with the N10 dual 350 dual exhausts. I've been tempted on several occasions to buy a set of the small block imitation W/Z e mans from Troy. Initial reports on them weren't really impressive. I see he has a 'make an offer' on ebay and shipping doesn't look terrible.

I agree! Go have some fun with him. Enjoy saving that (I'm guessing here but it looks like a 53 Super 88).
