My '68 has always had the air in the lines there, top works fine so I guess it's normal?
The pump uses Dextron III trans fluid.

Mine has air too, but works fine. No leaks in the system. I first thought it was low on fluid, but it was full. It uses Type "A" trans fluid aka Dextron. Sooooo, I guess it's normal

I, too, have some air in the lines and the top runs fine.
Only odd thing is that if you stop it coming up or going down, it will slowly move on its own (by its own weight), unless it is balanced in the center position.
Not sure if that is normal, but it runs fine and I would rather not try to fix something that is not really broke. You know how that goes...

Dextron ATF is recommended in the service manual.
