71 delta 88 muffler explosion

1971 delta 88 62k original miles,,,owned for 12 years always starts immediately. went to take it out for a spin, it started and ran for a few seconds then died. tried to start again and no luck. tried to start again next day after sitting overnight and no luck. next day got new points, condenser and coil. installed. set choke and turned key. got an immediate explosion, sounded like a gun when off,,,and then i immediately turned it off. muffler was split wide open with ash on floor. an hour later tried to start again with choke valve open. the car started, was loud, with muffler split open, but seemed to be running fine.
i ran it for a few minutes then shut it down. any ideas as to what the heck caused this to happen? thanks!

X2, also the timing is probably off due to the points change.

Have you checked for any turbans or towels in the tailpipe? Could have been a suicide mouse.
