hood as garage art

Looking for ideas for the best way to hang a hood ('68 Cutlass S) on a garage wall without damaging it. The hood is straight and only has surface rust at the front.
I'm afraid that hanging it by the captive nuts that the hinge bolts to would bend/damage the frame.? Hoods were not designed to hang vertically. Should I use a backing plate along the frame then hang it from the captive nuts that the hinge bolts to? If so how thick, 1/16", 1/8"? Has anybody else done this before?
Any other ideas? Or should I just put it up in the rafters?
Thanks!

Just use those screw hooks that are coated. The are used to hang stuff all the time

I hung a couple hoods in my garage using the hinge bolt holes with bolts screwed in and then wired to wood screws in the purlin boards on my garage. I cant believe it would bent the frame or anything- they aren't that weak. This way is only for function- doesn't look good-just works. If you are putting it up on the wall to look cool- as a man cave type thing, then you probably won't want this way. (I always thought it wood be cool to have a old mopar hood painted petty blue with 426 ci on it- or similar).

I have wanted to do this with an OAI hood for a long time... Could you bolt a steel plate to each side of the hood through the hood hinge holes. A plate maybe 3 inches by 24 inches and use all 4 bolt holes? Make the plate long enough on each side to be accessible from the top side of the hood. Drill holes in it to bolt the two plates to the wall and let the hood hang down from them.

That what I did ...it's not as much art as it is convenient storage but I guess if it has no arms and no legs and you hang it on the wall.....it's Art

That's an excellent idea. Painting the hood also adds to the appeal. I've been dreaming of doing this for years now, I just haven't had the room due to all the vintage junk I've collected over the years.

Please post a picture or two.

I've been trying for years to have my car reassembled in my family room. Obviously I've been going about this the wrong way. Start with hanging the hood till the missus gets used to that and move it in a bit at a time.....

I best leave well enough alone. Sleeping on a cold slab of concrete doesn't bode well.

Eric,
Here you go.
I made this about 20 years ago?? I cut up some decent parts to build it, but who knew??
If you pay attention, it is not quite correct, but close enough for a basement bar right?
I wired up some glove box lights to light it from behind so you can see your "pop" bottles. The whole thing is powered by a small battery charger that sits in the battery tray area.
I used to have it mounted against the outside wall of my garage at my old house. It kind of looked like a car had crashed through the wall. The battery charger was on a timer & the lights would come on at dusk & go off at dawn. I have a different project in mind, but have not started yet.

Scott, that's awesome!
Not looking to make a man cave just get it off the roof of the car and add some visual interest to the garage.
Anyone know what thread size the hood has? I'll stop and get some bolts on my way home.
Thanks for all the responses.

heres mine I just used the vinyl coated hooks into the studs and then some wire looped thru the holes to hang it, the steel hood I used chain thru it to hang it, this lets you adjust the height and angle if neccessary, for me its just convienient storage

Eric just noticed your location, im in mass too

So you're saying you have a spare 71/72 OAI hood that's got nowhere better to hang out than on your garage wall??? What brand and vendor was it?

not quite Allan its a hood thats not on my car now. it was on but needed some minor work I took it off and priorities shifted so while its not in use now it will be someday, the wall just makes good storage, out of the way and unlikely to get damaged, unlike my car which makes convenient storage for the winter but not so good when i goto work on it (its under that pile of parts in the foreground. its a glass tek from parts place

Love the wall art. I've been thinking about doing this with old parts off my cars.

Finally got around to hanging the hood this weekend. I ended up using a bolt through the middle captive nut. Went bolt-washer-chain-nut-washer-hood and hung it by eyebolts screwed into the roof rafters, I have a cinderblock garage.
Wanted to do this more for convenient storage, not so much art. But like RetroRange said "if it has no arms and no legs and you hang it on the wall.....it's Art" And it sure beats white cinderblock walls.
Sorry about the bad pic. I forgot to take a pic before I pulled that car back in the garage.
