My cutlass has been officially "de-trimmed" to prep it for the body and paint work. One of the things that I will be doing is cleaning up and painting the grill to get it right. Here are some current pics, but I have a few questions because I have been unable to find hardly any pics of '71 cutlass supreme grills that are the same. In the few that I found, everyone seems to do something different and I am looking for more of a stock look.
1. I know that I will be repainting the silver (or is it grey?), but is there a specific shade that I should use?
2. The black on the inserts, is that supposed to be there? Mine were painted sometime in the past, but the black seems almost glossy.
3. I know that the "Cutlass Supreme" emblem is a repro, but did the '71's have a cutlass supreme emblem or just an "Oldsmobile"?
1. The silver paint is Krylon Dull Aluminum, #1403.
2. The recessed areas are supposed to be black.
3. The "Cutlass Supreme" emblem in your picture is correct.

Thanks for the thread. That really helped. I guess now it time to start the prep.
Be careful when you remove the Cutlass Supreme emblem. It is easily broken.

Yeah. Mines already broken. Over the "e", which seems (according to the thread that Ken supplied) to be a very common occurrence. I'll check around to find a new one, but I'm not in a hurry. I have most of the winter to get the grills done.
The one on my car is broken as well. Been that was since at least 1998 when I painted the grilles; I've just never bothered with replacing the emblem as it isn't noticeable unless you "get right up in its grille" and look closely.

Just in case you are curious, I just found one through amazon from the parts place for $29.
I had mine powder coated silver (as close as they had to existing) and then used "one shot" black lettering enamel applied with an artist brush. Looks good and has held up well.
