70-442 Engine oil fill decal question
70-442 Engine oil fill decal question
I notice that InnLine states that their engine oil fill decals are black lettering because they "have NEVER seen an original decal with red lettering". Which is OEM correct? Also, I show the decal for a 70-442 with A/C automatic-OAI as a TV code. Is that correct?
Thanks

X2, I'm pretty sure the originals were black. That's what I've seen on super low mile survivors. But...I'm positive in the 1969 Olds Assembly Manual, there is a drawing of that label, with the dimensions of the letters, and letter designation. I'm also positive it specifically says the letters are RED. Maybe they left the engine plant in red and were changed to black on assembly, I don't know. There are more numbers on the black tags besides the letters. Maybe those numbers were originally consecutive. I was waiting for somebody to answer first. You DO have to be a bit careful with Inline stuff. They make many nice items. But they also have a tendency to say "this Blue Foil GM decal was found on the door of every 67-72 GM car made", and it wasn't. Do they know that? I think they do, but you buy it and then find out your 67 used aqua or your 71 never had one at all!
While we are talking decals.
Did all 70-442's come with the blue, not aqua, blue foil GM decal? I have heard different opinions on the blue GM decal that went above the V.I.N on the inside of the drivers door.
I don't know for sure, but I'm fairly positive IF they had them in 1970 they weren't aqua. Aqua was used for the early years. At some point there may have been a year when there was extra stock left over, so both may have appeared in one year. I don't think I have them on my 69, I think 68 may have been the last year for Olds...maybe not. It may have varied by plant. But people read what others write, or like the look and stick them on 70's.
