'69 has extras hole in the floor ?

new mwember here, restoring a '69 Cutlass convert. after pulling engine and tranny, under the floormat I found holes punched in the tunnel. on each side ! on the right side a hole about 3/4'' square punched thru, located about 6 or 8 '' to the rear of where the bellhousing would meet the tranny , and about 6'' up from the floor. On the driver side a hole about the same , but it is all rusted out around it. Do you know for what reason someone would do this ?

if they are in line (or close) to the tranmission to engine block bolts then someone punched them there to remove the trans. I have seen this a time or two. some of the bolts are hard to get to so they punch a hole and go through with an extension.

hey ! that could be ! I've had the car for almost 20 years, but looking thru the glove box, i found a reciept for a transmission dated '1982. So maybe he did it. I'll take a closer look...........that makes me think....why didn't he cover or plug the holes when he got done ? like maybe to keep some water out ?????/ thanks

he didnt cover the holes because most people are lazy and do just enough to get the job done. with some of the stuff I have seen over the years you start to understand why people distrust repair shops so much.

maybe I got some pics of the holes... well, only one pictiure came thru, but you can see the hole,, about 1/2 way up, in the black strip of sealer, a square 'punched ' hole, there's also one on the opposite side.........why ?????????

I don't know why but just had to comment that the floor looks to be in incredibly good condition with just slight surface rust. If the rest of the car is in similar condition you have a keeper!

most of the crap on the floorboards is glue residue from gluing the old carpet in. only rust is on the frame and x members. I fixed it up , mostly just new a paint about 15 years ago, now decided it's time to give it a good, down to the frame rebuild. I am going to attempt to do ALL the work myself, including the paint, transmission, the engine, except for any machine work , if neccessary. I have done most of it before, but, by no means am I an expert at any of this ! I WILL be asking for some assistance here. Like the holes in the floor boards ????

O K , so I'm fixing or ''restoring'' this car .... a '69 S convert. Question : how do I get the glue residue off ? It's on the conv top header ( from the front wrap ) and on the floor from the floormat ! Why would some one glue in the floor mat ?? Can't burn it off, just makes it sticky, Sanding works good, but alot of labor ?????????????
