69 culass stripes

Talking with a guy today. He has a 69 cutlass. It has white stripes on the hood and trunk, like a chevelle. He reckons it was correct and said you could special order the stripes as such. I admit I couldn't say he was right or wrong. So, is he correct. I know with special order things anything could be, I guess.

Tell him to show you the build sheet. Chevelle stripes were on Chevelles. Not Cutlass. And that was on purpose. No Cutlass owner in his/her right mind would check that box even if you DID have that box to check.

So far as I know, I have never ran across any 69 Olds ordering information that gave you Chevelle style trunk stripes from the factory.

W42 and Y73 were hood stripes, the first being the wide style stripes with the single pinstripe surround. The second being the dual perimeter hood bulge pinstripes. However, I didn't dig out my info to see if this was just 442 option or you could get it on a Cutlass S or whatever.

I think W42 was W-machine standard hood stripes, though.

He reckons incorrectly. Yes to the wide hood stripes on 1969 W-30s or W-31s, but never decklid stripes. Just thin horizontal pinstripes along the bottom of the decklid.

I'd bet a lot of 18-25 year old original owners would have checked that box back then if it was an option. A lot of A-body Olds owners were not necessarily more sophisticated, just young guys who probably wanted fast and flashy rides like anyone else that age at the time. Cripes, the '69 H/Os had the stripes and those were supposedly originally purchased by more mature owners.

One more time: with the exception of the 1970 Indy Pace Car replicas and the 1972 H/O NO OLDSMOBILE ever came from the factory with dual wide stripes on the trunk, period. As Terry noted, in 1969 the wide RPO W42 hood stripes were included with the W30, W31, and W32 packages. They were also available on any 442 that year as a $18.96 option.

I will go into denial on that and take that to the grave. Oldsmobile saved the youngsters from themselves, I suppose. John Beltz to the motoring public as the Oldsmobile Stripe **** : "No Chevelle stripes for you!"

The 69 H/O didn't have an option box for stripes. One color, one style, standard. But they were all just a bit different. And they surely weren't Chevelle stripes. Thank goodness. I've already had a few people call the H/O a GTO. Which is even worse than Chevelle stripes.

Thanks for the information. I was 99% sure that that was the case, But I don't like making comments unless I am absolutely sure that what I am saying is correct.
