Hood stripes only?

The guy that was painting my car screwed up on the side stripe stencil when he was painting my car. i was in no position to buy another stencil at the time so i told him not to worry about the stripes.(figured i would get it dont at a later time) well when i went to go check my car afterwords he still painted the hood strips or horizonal trunk stripe. so now i have a 72 442 with only hood stripes.

What are ur guys opinions on only hood stripes?

do u think i should still get the side and horizonal trunk stripes done?

It's your car, what do you think? Personally I like the side stripes. if you are trying to do a stock-type resto I think it needs them.

I'll be vey corrected if I'm wrong, but I'm darn sure that there was never trunk stripes on the Oldsmobiles, just Chev's and Pontiacs. As for the side stripes, I've seen lots of 442's with no side stripes. I Think they look just as good with or without.
I think your good to go! Besides, if you like it...that's all that really matters!

Yes most olds thaat had hood or side stripes came with trunk stripes.

Its the stripe that follows the bumber line not the stripe that goes from window to bumper. the blue car in ur avatar should have it.

Its a trade deal. and he hooked me up quite a bit. so i didn't push it.

Maybe i will just get it on the road and drive it for a little while. put the side stripes on at a later time.

I just wanted to see if people would think its less of a car if it had the hood stripes and nothing else.

oops. I thought you meant 2 trunk stripes that would match your ram air stripes, like on a Chevelle. I've seen people do that and wondered why. I know what you mean now. Sorry for the confusion.
No way it seems less of an Olds with out'm (IMO)
Seems like it bugs you they aren't on there. If that's the case then finish it up.
Also what Firefrost said...coldn't you get the painter to help you out since he goofed it up?

I wouldn't worry about it for now, the 70 442 had such thin side stripes they weren't always easy to see. If it came withe the W25 hood it usually had the hood stripes. I too have seen some cars with hood stripes and no side stripes at all. looks fine to me.

Yes, do the side stripes. The side stripes really make the car pop. Just hood stripes would make me think there's something missing. As far as the trunk reveal line? Nawww, just leave it with the stainless molding across the deck lid area
Anyway, that's my 2cents worth.

To clarify, the only Olds to have the skunk stripes on the trunk was the 1970 pace car and the '72 H/O.

Here's my POV: The guy was paid to do a job. He screwed up. A legit person would make things right. And, personally, I think the trunk looks naked without the stripes. Why go through the effort to do everything else yet leave this off because the painter geeked it?

I did a trade with the painter i had a 55 cheby that he wanted and i needed a paint job. he did a good job painting my car the side stripes are the only bad thing that happened. the 55 i had no money in to and it needed alot of work so i put the value of that around 3-4000. my car needed 1/4s and paint(he said he would of charged someone 8000$ for what he did for me).

so when he called me and told me about the side stripes i was out of town and didnt have the money any ways so i told him not to worry about the stripes (i figured i would just do all the stripes in a sticker or something later on) but when i got back to town i went down and looked at it and he still did the hood stripes. if i was a paying customer and it was a trade deal then he probably would of made it right. (i hope)

Just having hood stripes makes me thing of a non-olds. so i figures i would ask u guys for ur opinions. to see what other olds guys thought when they seen an olds with only hood stripes. My car is a 72 442 i was originally going to do the w-30 stripe on the side. but sense it didnt get painted i will probably just do the thinner 72 stripe instead.

There are no decal or stencil kits that I know of for the thinner triple stripes for a 1972 442 (I looked for them). Your only option is to get the dimensions from the assembly manual and paint them on.

I think the car would look better with the side stripes.

My painter was leary at painting the side stripes so I had them put on in vinyl for just under $200 they look not bad just another option.

Nice! Beautiful 71 - love the color combo. I see you have the Y73 hood stripe too. In 72, the 442 appearance stripes were decals too. One good thing about decals, you can change them whenever you want (different color or pattern) without affecting your paint. Assuming of course you don't attack the decal with a knife or scraper.

No kit just used the page I think that Jamesbo posted and some close up pics I found on the web. A good striper, (this is becoming a lost art) can do this in about an hour or less. all done by free hand.

Only disadvantage is that the striping kit requires at least 2 cuts where the wheel is. But if done right, no one will see it. My car had its stripes done at a company called "Supergraphics" They used an in house jig that they had from the 70's to do the stripes. Still looks great and didn't cost that much. Products today are much better and will probably look/last better.
